Planning a 2019 thru-hike of the PCT (~2650mi).

I've been doing research on packs, and have seen most recommending a 58-70L pack.

I want to make my base weight as low as possible and want to try a 58L, but will this be enough for all my gear (clothes, water, tent, bag, pad, etc.) Plus the required bear canister?

I feel like anything above 65L is too much weight to capacity ratio; but I also don't want to run out of space before even getting the canister in there.

Anyone here pull a long-distance hike, and what size pack did you use?

There are a few threads in the sticky at the top of the page. Some good info there.

Admittedly I don't have to use a bear canister on the AT but I used an Osprey Aether 45.

Man, I wish I could help but I can't. Might want to put this on the Offthe freakingcharts board but that's your call. If you have time, some good people will respond from this board.

Yea, it's required in Yosemite and one other NP I think. Just a pain in the arse is really all it is. I don't see why an Ursack strung up wouldn't be enough.

I wish I could go 45...Looked at a 48, but there's no way that would be enough space.

no, but I recently heard a podcast where it was discussed and briefly considered dropping out of my life and spending a few months hiking the AT. But I have bills and a GF so......frick.

It's certainly a big undertaking. I just so happen to have a 6-8 month window after my contract is up with my current job. Plus, I'll be saving a good deal of dough between now and then.

If I could take off 3 years I'd complete the Triple Crown, but I can't stay out of my career for that long

I haven't followed the whole bear canister thing in eons. In my day ursack was approved for a while but they had just lost their approval. I was using a competitor product called crittersack. Ursack forced them out of business because ursack said they violated a patent of theirs. Crittersack was just a single guy working out of his basement business and didn't have the money to try to fight the patent claim. My Spectra clad crittersack worked great on the AT. Never had a single more problem, at least not with my food. Wool socks on the other hand...

Had heard of crittersack, didn't know the back story.

Normally I would too, but from what I've been reading, the rangers in Yosemite are adamant about checking packs and permits. Problem is, you have to ship the canister to yourself as close to the Sierras as possible and carry it over some of the roughest terrain on the trail. Really just a PItA...

58 should be enough. Don't carry a bunch of extra crap. I would look at Granite Gear packs, Osprey are the REI rec of choice and they are fine.

Check out the cottage gear scene if you really want to some light weight stuff. Six Moon Designs, Mountain Laurel Designs, Zpacks, etc.

You have to carry the canister, most people use the smallest bear vault I believe. I think a lot of people end up sleeping with their food because they can't fit it all in the canister. YMMV on that one, not a recommendation.

There are a lot of hiking forums where you will get better responses and ifnormation. I really like backpackinglight and whiteblaze particularly for gear related questions.
