Any advice for a small Jon boat with trolling motor for fishing marsh?

Anyone think this would be bad? Kayak out of the question for me due to just having heart surgery and I do not feel like going through what comes with a large boat.

Something like a little flat back canoe with a trolling motor wouldn't be bad if you're staying in protected bays or marsh near a launch or roadway

I do have a 25 hp evinrude sitting in my dads shed that was run once in 1965. I could rebuild it if the part prices are worth it. Haven't looked into it yet. Trolling motor just seems like less hassle and cheaper.

An extra battery plus Cajun anchor and you've got yourself a great marsh boat. You don't need mirage drive or 300 horses to get on some good fish when the weather is right.

My neighbor fishes out of a 10' flat with a 2hp outboard near Chef Pass, mainly in the harbor and marsh right behind us. It works fine; he has back issues and cannot use a kayak either.

A trolling motor would be ok for short trips in protected water. Avoid high wind, rough water and make sure it has enough amp hours of battery.

My dad had heart surgery and I would be concerned about him fishing alone.

I had a 16'cc flat with a Yamaha 40 and a trolling motor. Had a blast in that boat. It was perfect for me to fish by myself. Burnt very little gas and I could easily handle it myself at the ramp. I'd put it in at Crawford Landing down the street from my house, run down the West Pearl about 25 minutes, then fish the mouth of the Pearl and that Rigolets area, and run all over Lake Borgne. Also fished in Bay St. Louis a good bit. I mainly fished reds, and it was the PERFECT redfishing machine. All of the ponds I fished, I'd never see another boat because no one else could reach them. Give me a foot or two of water and I was good to go. The one I has was a Lakesport, and I paid around $9K for the whole rig new. I can't fish anymore due to my back and neck, but if I could I'd buy another boat like that tomorrow.

i take my 16' CC with a 50 Yamaha anywhere from the platforms in raccourci, off the beaches on calm days and chase reds deep in the marsh during the summer... I even put a pop up blind on it this year to duck hunt

When was this? That's a hell of a deal for a 16' CC

I've been running poling skiffs for years. Fly fished around the globe for just about every game fish species imaginable. The most fun I've ever had in Louisiana was out of a beat to shite 13 foot gheenoe with a trolling motor that I bought for $150. It leaked, someone had painted over the gelcoat with exterior house paint. Looking back on it a small outboard would have been optimal. Something under 8hp that I could pick up easily.

I don't know about trout fishing in that thing but it was hell on side of the road redfish. I had a couple of spots down hwy 23 that were tailor made for a small boat like that.

It was back around 2005-6 or so. They may have gone up since then.

Yeah. Might get gas. Still haven't decided. I cannot fish for 6-8 months as of now per my docs. Sucks being 36 and having a 9+ hour open heart surgery. Hope to be back at it soon though.

I have found that Jon boats at least 48 inches wide across the bottom are very stable.

I have a 1648 with a 25 hp two stroke. It is a very versatile boat for the fishing I do. Which is not in the ocean.

Hope you make a full recovery. Hate to see a young man go through that.

Do you plan on trailering it?

A small flatboat can be a bitch to load into the back of a truck for a person in good condition.

I used to fish out this when I was in college. Same model. Got pic off google. Added a swivel stand 36" from walmart and smallest deep cycle battery I could find. Worked great unless winds were high

I'm gonna try to get it in the truck bed before I trailer it unless I find a good deal with a trailer. I was in pretty good condition before and should be again. I'm 6'2 195 and used to be able to run 12 miles. Just all depends on how I recover and how much weight I'm dealing with.

ended up finding a 15 foot aluminum boat, 73 evinrude, mariner foot controlled trolling motor(kinda old), trailer for $600. Motor runs well and trailer has new bearing and tires. Should be fun.
