I caught a small mangrove at queen bess this year.

We find mangroves in Leeville with some regularity. One of the weirdest things I have ever seen down there, though, was when my dad went out to the boat to grab a beer and found a live mangrove flopping around on the floor of the boat. This one was probably about 8-10". He walked inside holding it with a confused look on his face. It was still green and swam off like nothing happened when we dropped it back in the water.

How does one tell the difference between a Pompano and a Permit?

I've never caught either but they look similar in the pictures I've seen

Easiest way for me: Pompano have a sloped head vs. flat and then hump on a permit and pompano are grayer with yellow coloration whereas permit are silvery/white white little other coloration. Also, permit have the really long and pointy dorsal and anal fins.

pampano. Have caught them in barataria usually late in the summer. Very good eating

Pompanos are very good eating, but that's no pompano. It's a Florida permit. A pompano's forehead is one smooth line and doesn't rise to a hump and then slope back like the one in the picture. Also, a permit's dorsal fin is sloped back like the one in the picture; a pompano's dorsal fin is more vertical.
