How the hell is this allowed to happen in the United States?
quote:

The governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands has ordered its national guard to seize guns, ammunition and other weapons from its citizens as the territory prepares for Hurricane Irma to make landfall.

Calm the frick down. You have to handle things differently on a small island with limited resources.

Why are people so willing to give up freedom for perceived safety?

Yeah this reads to be more of them seizing them as needed to properly equip the national guard, not as measure trying to disarm the citizens.

Still slightly scary none the less. I saw the NRA is threatening to sue.

That's not what that order says

Good, I'm glad you found the part that is in reference to your original quote.

Now tell me how this:

quote:

The Adjutant General is authorized and directed to seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material and any other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of this emergency mission...

means this:
quote:

American Virgin Islands governor orders NG to confiscate all guns and ammo

Or this:
quote:

The governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands has ordered its national guard to seize guns, ammunition and other weapons from its citizens as the territory prepares for Hurricane Irma to make landfall.

That's how I read it as well. It's very ambiguous in it's wording.

Yeah it could have been worded a lot better for sure.

Much like other shite like this, they leave it ambiguous on purpose.

It is ambiguous. It leaves the door open to take the guns.

It's a scary proposal to say the least and should be if it isn't illegal.

I suppose, but it appears as if they're trying to say they have the right to seize resources to help them combat hurricane related issues. I can see how some would be skeptical, though.

What is the NG gonna do, shoot the hurricane?

Are they trying to say the NG needs to confiscate private arms for their selves? Why are they not already armed?

It's means that they have the authority to do whatever in the hell that they need to do during this "emergency mission" (rescue people one of the damn scariest hurricanes known to man). It literally says that in the order.

You know what's scary? 185 mph sustained winds. I don't think the USVI NG is going to looking for guns as much as bodies.

There was a federal passed after what chocolate city mayor did after Katrina to prevent this. VI governor using the excuse to arm the national guard to circumvent the law.

You don't know what they'll do and that's the whole problem here. Its carte blanche to basically do whatever the hell they want to in order to save people.

I'm sorry, but the government should not have the ability to go out and confiscate citizens weapons.

Or perhaps shoot looters or others using the hurricane or aftermath as an opportunity for crime. Not saying I like the order or think it is necessarily a good idea

It does seems to indicate that the guard there is not well equipped or at least not well maintained.
