quote:That is complete bs. A ceramic grill doesnt make you a better cook, but it does have more versatility.
The ONLY advantage a ceramic has over the 940x is it's ability to hold heat for a long period of time.

Bought a Vision from SAMS almost 3 years ago. Have used it hundreds of times for all sorts of grilling, smoking, searing, pizzas, you name it. Has been a great grill. Would buy another in a heart beat. All i did was replace the factory gasket with a high heat nomex gasket from amazon after the factory one wore out. Other than that i keep the ashes clean and keep it covered and it rolls coal like a champ.

It also gets hotter. I've had my BGE over 800 degrees, I had a Weber for over 10 years and I don't think it ever got over 550 degrees and that's being kind. When you get that cast iron grill 650+ degrees and throw some meat on there to sear its a thing of beauty to literally hear it. That's not something you can get with a lower end charcoal grill.
I also use considerably less charcoal, I probably use at least 2 bags less a year of charcoal. I have no idea, but it may be closer to 5. At $15/ bag+ for charcoal that adds up.

bumping this thread because I think the BGE cost too much. So does the OB recommend the Vision or the Primo? Those seem to be the top 2.

I bought my Vision 2 years ago in the fall at the local Sams. They had them on clearance for $449. I'm very happy with it. Works great. I use it at least 2 times a week.
I can't speak to the more expensive ones.

I stand corrected. For some reason I thought the Primo was cheaper. So what advantage does it have over the BGE?

Exactly this for me as well. Bought the Pitboss for my dad last year..from Costco. Another good alternative @ $499

I believe it does produce better food.

Primo XL has the most grill area.

The shape provides more efficient use of cooking space in my opinion.

Get the pitboss to save money. 599 for a 24" ceramic

I have the Vision as well. It is definitely a quality grill for the price. With that being said, I use mostly BGE accessories as they are far superior in every aspect to the Vision accessories.

I just bought a BGE. Ultimately it was because of the hardware store that sold them and the service level they provide (assembled, delivered, let me use the nest for free while I built my table, came help install in the table once built, handles warranty issues directly, etc.). What I noticed on the major brands
BGE- expensive once you include the accessories that are standard on other models. Sold in smaller stores where they are able to handle any warranty claims.
Kamado Joe- People feel that it is less expensive than BGE, but the reality is, they were the same price (KJ 1200 with all accessories, BGE 859 with no accessories, 1200 with equivalent accessories). KJ does have some small feature upgrades like lid assist. Sold in big box stores where you may not get the dealer help in the future.
Vision- Older ones looked decent. I did not care for the bottom vent contraption on the newer models I saw at Home Depot. Looked like there was too much crap to break.
Primo- Similar to KJ or BGE, but their selling point is the oval grill. Not really saving any money by going with them or gaining anything other than if you like that shape.
Pit Boss- It goes on sale at Costco, but the one near me was 699. It says it's a 24 inch, but it measures 22. Seemed decent. I'd probably buy it over the Vision. But again, it's a big box store brand and some of the accessories looked slightly cheaper than the big name brands, but not much.
I think they all work the same. Vision is the only one I had issues with buying. And not because it wouldn't work. Just 10 years from now, I see all those knobs and stuff being broken and the design having changed, then they aren't available anymore. A refund check and a bonus coming on the same day made me not care about the price difference . Spending extra on the BGE didn't hurt me and I was very impressed with the hardware store, so that's why I chose it. Otherwise, I was going to get the Pit Boss.
to those saying it's not any better and a waste..... . It may not be worth it to you, but in the week I've had it, I've lit it 5 times. It's stupid easy to hit the exact temps I want and it holds it steadier than my oven (I've checked with my probe thermometers). I can keep that thing in a 10 degree window for hours while touching it very sparingly.

Except the firebox divider and the ability to cook indirectly...

Plate setter allows you to cook indirectly. Plus you can get a divider for the others if you wanted to.

Exactly. This past Saturday I made 3 8lb boston butts for my daughters bday which I had never done 3 on my BGE before. Honestly it was borderline too much meat, I think 2 10-12 lbers would be better. I had to stand the meat up on the bones whereas I usually put the fat back side up.
I lit the charcoal at 5pm and put the meat on at 6. All that meat dropped the temp a lot for about 2 hours from 225 to under 200. But by the time I went to bed at 10:30 it was settled at 245 degrees. I normally do 225 but I had ran out of charcoal so I only had about 3/4s full and with the 3 pieces of meat I was worried it would burn through faster. Needless to say, my daughter woke up at 4:30 crying and I checked it 250 exactly. Then I woke up at 6:15, checked it again at 250 exactly. I pulled it at 7am. They were all perfect.
I got my spots where I can hit 225, 250, 400, 550, and then full blast is 725-775 depending on how clean the ash pan is and what not. I can hit those temps almost perfectly every time.

Lowes had a charbroil version for $297 in Ruston today

I'm still not to the point where I have the confidence to let it run all night. But I'll only have had it a week tomorrow. I have lit it for 5-6 hours twice (once just to play with it, once for ribs). Maybe touched it 4 times each time once I got to my desired temp. And touching it was to keep it in a 10 degree window and was probably not necessary. To cook burgers and chicken, I have much more confidence that I can get it to 375ish-400 and keep it there the whole cook.
