The woman I was guiding said that while she did not remember smelling the bear’s breath, it was close enough to her face that it could have bitten her!

American Hunter

I wonder if they all had to change their pants after the encounter. I know I would have.

Edit: Fix pic

why was he carrying a 9 in the Alaskan bush? Is that a caliber typically use for defense from bears?

My old boss from back in the day had went on several bear hunts, elk hunts and fishing trips in Alaska. He said all the guides carried 44mag or better on the hip. Not sure if the new 9mm tech makes a difference....

Personally, frick that. I'm not carrying a 9mm out there. Something in a big bore revolver would be what I walked around with.

While I appreciate the enthusiasm, I don't think Larry would've gotten too far with that stick.

My first shot was at its neck, and then it began growling and spinning toward the impact. I wanted to hit the head but the bear was moving so fast I simply began shooting each time I could hit a vital area. I hit it six times before it turned to run off, and my seventh shot was into its pelvis area as it ran. When it dropped within 6 feet of the last shot, I checked my pistol and found I had only a single round left in the chamber so decided against walking in and finishing it. My pistol was loaded with Buffalo Bore 9mm +P Outdoorsman 147-grain FN hard-cast loads that have a muzzle velocity of 1100 fps. I had previously tested, compared and proven such loads with my .357 and .44 mags., and I was convinced they would work.

I just got back from a Kodiak fishing trip, and the guides all agreed that anything less than a 44 would just anger a Kodiak Brown bear (barring a lucky shot). I imagine after this article that they'd still agree.

Did you read the article? He usually carries a 44 Mag but they're were only males in the area who aren't as aggressive as females with cubs. They startled this one.

I read the article and it still doesn't make sense. Just because sows don't frequent the area doesn't mean there's zero possibly. I would think you'd always want to be prepared for the absolute worst.

If I were in bear country like that I'd want bigger hardware, but with that said, dude just smoked Griz with a 9MM by placing multiple accurate shots on target. Kudos to him!

I believe it was a 10mm

Guide stated he normally doesn't carry in that area since bears aren't a problem there, carrying in this case was a last minute decision

My bad, wrong story.

LINK

quote:

A Homer man shot and killed a charging sow brown bear at Humpy Creek last Friday. Kim Woodman, 57, shot the bear five times with a 10mm handgun before the bear fell about 6 feet from him. While backing away from the sow, Woodman fell and accidentally shot himself in the left foot . . .

Park Ranger Jason Okuly and Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologist Jason Herreman went to the scene and found that the sow died from two gunshot wounds, one below the right eye and one in the chest.

And then he shot his own foot.

Well, at least he lived to tell the story.

Yeah, lost part of his toe. I'd take that trade though.

Lots of aggressive bears this year.
