Good photo sequence showing how to deal with aggressive brown bears. These people were in the right place at the right time as rangers were across the river. There have been several aggressive bears near the Savage River.

So that's all you have to do is raise your arms straight up in the air?

Eta: read the article and you're supposed to make yourself big and tall. Not sure I could just stand there hoping for the best.

When I went up there,we stayed in those cabins that had a loft like a train car. It was really cool. Very similar to this one I found online.

There was a common area within walking distance with a kitchen and dining area you could use. They made a big deal about bagging your trash and told us a guy had been killed by a bear the day before near the dumpster outside. My mom didn't want to stay there after they told us that. My brother and I got her to stay by assuring her they probably tell everyone that just to be sure people take it seriously.

We rode one of those buses around for hours.

roger, ive wondered this for a while:
what is the difference btwn brown bears, grizzlys, and kodiaks.
ive been told they are all brown bears but ive also read about all 3 as if they are distincly separate species.

You stay in the park? Kantishna?

Yeah, I love Denali but it's getting too crowded.

It's the old joke you don't have to be faster than the bear just faster than your buddy ??. Seriously glad.it worked.out for them. I've worked in brown bear and polar bear territory and the wildlife monitor. .. aka the local w the rifle...

They're all brown bears but the interior bears are called Grizzleys. Coastal bears are called Coastal Brown Bears and the ones on Kodiak Island are Kodiaks. Food is so plentiful for coastal bears in Ak that they grow to huge sizes. On the ABC islands, there are far more bears than people and little human development.

Bears on the ABC islands of Southeast Alaska (near me) can get about as big as Kodiaks. Up to 1,200 lbs. Interior grizzleys only get up to about 600 lbs max.

Kodiaks can get up to 1,500 lbs. To confuse things more, Toklat Grizzleys near Denali (blonde bears) are lighter than most other brown bears.

The bear in the above story may be a Toklat.

Yeah, they have full time polar bear patrols in many arctic villages. Even in the football games in Barrow, there are armed patrols to keep the bears away from the football game.

Agreed. I had a black bear get a little too curious in pennaylvania one day.

I looked up from grabbing a piece of wood and he was aboit 30 yards off. I stood up straight and squared off and old boy took a few steps forward. I legitimately roared and ran a few steps forward and he bolted.

I don't think I scared him, I think he smelled me crap my pants

There was a mean little guy (black bear) who bluff charged me several times last year. Cool little 2-3 year old though, it was a cinnamon black bear. You forget sometimes even those little guys can kill you.

Thanks for clarifying.
All browns have the same cranky attitude as the grizzlys in the lower 48?
