advice on jug lines for catfish

i want to try throwing out floats for cats and have never done it and need advice.
should i suspend the hooks up in the water column with a weight set below the hook and sitting on the bottom?
set the hook on the bottom close to the weight?
forget the weight and just let the bait and hook float free under the weight?
if i do the later should i plan on the bait and hook being up in the water column or on the bottom?

This, set hooks at multiple depths on each jug

Set the bait about 8 inches above the weight. Make sure the hook is on a separate line tied to the main line with the weight so that the hook is free. This line should be at least 4" long. At least that's how I do it. Also, I find that trot lines work better FWIW.

multiple hooks on each jug; good idea.
fwiw, i'm mainly a saltwater guy, but mack jr has it in his head that we need to get busy on this activity.

Weight below the hook and suspended at different depths. Catch some bream and use as cut bait.

Good information - we typically just go with one hook per line and try different depths but average about 2-3' deep. We have also had great success using yo-yo's with shiner just under the surface. best choice of bait for me is nightcrawlers though. Good luck and send pics.

Anyone ever use the fun noodles instead of jugs for this? I heard of cutting the noodles into 2-3' lengths and they lay down on the water. If a fish is on it stands upright in the water. Anyone know of this?

Noodles are the best to use, but you can use one ft sections with a piece of PVC through the middle

I'm planning on make some soon... What do y'all use for line?

#16 or #18. I prefer the black, but doesn't really matter.

if using crawfish for bait: live, whole, just the tail with/without shell?

Nylon string. We usually have 2 hooks on each line, with a decent sized nut for a weight.

thanks...that what you usually use...was just wondering if thats what everyone else did as well

I use a noodle with about a 2 ft leader. You'll be surprised how much catfish are surface feeders too. They'll come up for it.
I'm not about to put a weight on a jug line. Too much trouble/mess to pick up. It would take the fun out, imo. The disadvantage is I'm lmited to open water spots but they're a lot of fun.

Live is better but for catfish, dead or tails also will work.

Nobody mentioned beer Boudain cracklins or hoghead cheese.

gatorade bottles
glow sticks
2 feet down
any normal catfish bait
plenty beer
toss them out and wait to see the glowing bottle run across the water.
