The only way to make meaningful change is with evidence based information. The purpose of the media outlets is supposed to be the delivery of raw information to the public.
Many people have argued the validity of gun crime statistics recently and the possibilities to curb these tragedies. Additionally many have debated the varying degree of media bias interfering in those statistics. Do you feel the following suggestion would support your current stance on firearms and/or the media?
All media sources should be required to report the following in stories about shootings in similar outline form at the start of the article/story.
Shooter: name, age, citizenship/unknown
Previous criminal record: yes/no/unknown
Gun obtained legally: yes/no/unknown
Gun used: make and model/unknown
Type of gun: rifle/handgun/shotgun/ unknown
Fire selection: single, semi auto, auto/unknown
Shooting prevented/ended by: legally armed citizen, illegally armed citizen, armed LEO, unarmed individual/unknown
Then at the back of the paper or web page there should be a section referencing the original article/story with all of that information updated monthly on every shooting reported on by that media outlet until sentencing for surviving known shooters, or for a period of 1 yr for all other shootings. The summary information should include the results of sentencing and a list of the prosecuted laws.
That type of raw data could be used to better make informed decisions and support beneficial change.
Media outlets recurrently presenting incorrect information above a certain threshold should be held financially accountable and their individual accurate reporting rankings should be made public. The proceeds from fines could be used to fund a victim’s assistance program.
