A400 not dropping shells from magazine - what's wrong?

At the end of the hunt on Monday, my buddy's A400 wouldn't drop the sells out of the magazine so he was unable to remove the shells. By pulling back the bolt, he was able to eject the one in the chamber, but when he presses the float button that usually drops a shell out of the magazine, nothing happens. Has anyone encountered this?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Does it still cycle when normal shooting?

May need a cleaning, or just have to bust off 3 at the end of each hunt for the rest of his life. His choice.

Does it have a magazine control lever on left side? My browning gold has a lever that will "lock" the rounds in the magazine, that allows you to switch the round in the chamber with a separate shell by hand. For instance if duck hunting and a hog runs up, you can toggle the lever, eject the shell, and load a slug / buckshot etc without disturbing the duck loads in the tube.

Sounds like a trip to to the gunsmith is in someone's future.

You might want to look into the legality of that.

Not sure. We were back at the parking area when all this went down and he couldn't fire it there. Then we went home so he hasn't had an opportunity to shoot it since.

He has prob never taken the mag spring out during cleaning. Its a bit of a PITA with 4 pins in the retaining cap. That should take care of him though.

Sounds like crud (technical term for mud, dirt, debris, etc.) is impeding the follower from moving freely in the magazine tube.

Or (much less likely) he has an out-of-spec shell that's stuck in the magazine tube.

I've had this issue with my A390 2 times in the past 10 years.

He just gave it a thorough cleaning a couple of weeks ago and he is anal about his stuff so that seems unlikely but I'll pass it along.

Can he not manually depress the shell stop to release the shells from the mag?

Mine got gummed up around the follower. So much so that I took sandpaper to sand it down (the plastic part) to get it to slide through easier. Unless he took it and the spring out, he wouldn't know it was in need of cleaning.
