You misspelled AK47. But seriously, I have never heard SKS horror stories. It's all military surplus, your biggest concern would probably be the condition of the stock if you ordered one on-line sight unseen.

Can't see spending 650 up on an AK. just want something in 7.62-39. Maybe an AR upper.

I have Noriinco and I love it. Never had a failure at its pretty accurate put to about 200 yds.

I would strongly advise against that unless you love problem solving and practicing failure drills.

Just get a blackout upper if set on an AR.

I would get an AK over sks due to the detachable magazine. Why not just get both

Well they sell detachable mag kits for the SKS. Also, .300blk is a bit expensive compared to 7.62X39 which is really the selling point (cheap cost for a good intermediate cartridge). But yeah, if cost isn't a factor, .300blk AR all the way.

I wish i could go back in time and buy a crate of SKS rifles. Back when i bought my first AK you could get them for around $70 didn't buy one at the time since the gun shop talked them down.

Maybe a Mini-30?

No.

(ETA: I have a Russian Army SKS from the 1950s - I love it partially because the serial number starts with the Russian letters "F" and "U" )

Seems like that would probably be the best all around truck gun if you had a ranch

firstly congrats on recognizing the finest 7.62 rifle ever made. secondly, the best deal on an SKS right now is on the new-condition yugos at classic firearms

LINK

these are factory fresh (been in storage since manufacture). i have one and love it

i also have an AK (norinco), another SKS (norinco) and a mini 30. of all of them the yugo is my favorite

Booooo. If you want a detachable mag go with a different system. SKS just works great with the fix 10 found mag. Stripper clips are cheap and take up zero room when you compare it to the duck bill SKS detachable magazines. The fixed is also much more reliable. With a little practice you can feed the SKS from strippers really quickly. I love the way the SKS handles without a giant magazine hanging out of the bottom. It's pretty tough to beat as a bush gun.

I agree. If AK is off the table (and for me, pretty much is), then go with a Russian or Yugo SKS, or a mini-30.

SKS is also a pretty non-complex system if you keep it fixed magazine. Straightforward - easy to maintain, reliable.

Just a bit heavy, since it's 100% wood, stamped metal and steel.

I've had 2 Norinco & 2 Russian SKS over the years, & fired them lots, with Zero stoppages or other problems. They have Chrome-lined Bores & Chambers.

I think the Yugos are not Chrome-lined. Would you be so kind as to confirm, one way or t'other?
