Got my son a Ruger American for his birthday in 300blk out so I decided I'll build one for myself in a AR as well. Couple questions...

1. What gr bullet should he shoot for deer (I plan on using suppressor)

2. What set up should I build for me (already have a stripped lower). Plan on using suppressor and would like a 8.5" pistol build but was wondering about cycling issues?

I have taken hogs with 150gr supersonics and 208gr subs.

ETA: the hogs I killed were within 100yds

I'd try to find some 125gr for deer.

If you're getting a suppressor go ahead and SBR your gun.

As I understand it the .300 AAC cycles best with a pistol length gas tube. That's what I have on mine and I've never had any issues though I've only shot supersonic out of it a few times. Mine has 8.5" barrel.

there are much better options for calibers and rifles for deer hunting. Yes it's possible to kill a deer with a 300blk but it's got the muzzle energy of a .357 mag in the subsonic weights and misses the muzzle energy of the 7.62x39 by around 400 ft lb IIRC in the super sonic weights.

Alot of people like to use hunting activities as an excuse to get/build a 300blk, but I personally would choose something else. Remember the 300 blk was chiefly commissioned to replace the suppressed 9mm sub guns. In the super sonic category they were looking to mimic the 7.62x39 ballistics, which in my opinion they hit the first mark and missed the second.

I've got a dozen other calibers to kill deer, but this is for my 7 year old to hunt with. He's moving up from a 223.

Need what's best option for hunting not what other caliber should I get.

for 300blk best option would be supers with a hunting bullet.

7mm-08 or two forty tree would have been a more proper caliber to move into IMO.

Yup. Go with the 7mm-08. I know plenty of people who have killed elk and black bear with the caliber.

If its an AR for deer hunting use the 6mm- 6.5 grendel. Or AR-10

Haha, the OB never disappoints. Say I've already bought 300 blk and ask about bullets, answers tell me about other rds I already know about. Never fails

Do you have access to someone who reloads? If so, I can point you towards a 135 grain bullet (not loaded cartridge) by Sierra that is excellent.

I've got two different .300 BLK rifles. My first build has a 16" barrel and I've hunted and killed both deer and hogs with it. I highly recommend a 125 grain with some sort of ballistic tip.

My suppressed .300 BLK has a 9.5" barrel and the 220 grain Remington OTM's function the best so far. I've yet to kill any animals with it though.

Be selective with the subsonic ammo. Reloads tend to be dirty, leaving a ton of residue on the bolt. Along with the 220's I've used a 208 grain Hornady as well and they function nicely.

Hope this helps.

Also, with my SBR Suppressed .300 BLK, I've shot 110 and 125 supersonic ammo with zero cycling issues. It's just a tad louder.

Have fun with the build. If you have any questions, please ask.

Pistol length gas system with adjustable gas block and you will be fine

For deer i would shoot the Barnes 110 grain tac-tx black tips. I have seen many animals taken with them online although no personal experience. I just got into the blackout myself and plan to use it as a close range deer and hog gun with the barnes super sonic rounds. Inside 125-150 yds it should work great.

I have a nice subsonic recipe
Hornady 220 gr Round nose Interlock
11.0 gr Accurate 1680

I have no issues cycling and it locks the bolt back after the last round. Average Chrono is around 1000 Ft PS.

I am going to gell test in a few weeks. My hope is that the round nose will have a little better expansion than a pointed tip rd.

If your going to reload subsonic Accurate 1680 is the best powder to use hands down.

I haven't gotten a chance to shoot any of my 300 blk reloads yet. Using barnes tac-tx 110 grain over 19.5 grains of H110. Had some trouble seating primers even though I swaged the brass with crimped primer pockets.

Does shooting subs making that big of a diff? Worth losing the velocity?
