30-30 ammo question?

To those of you who regularly hunt with a 30-30, Which ammo and grain of bullet do you use? I just put a scope on mine and was looking for a good hunting round to start off with. I know all rounds shoot differently out of each gun but just trying to narrow it down.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Remington core-lokt 170gr. I was shooting Barnes but after a couple seasons went back to core-lokt.

150 grain Remington core locks in the one I shoot. The heavier grained rounds tended to not group well for me out past 100yards.
I mostly just use the gun for a brush gun if I am going to be hunting in dense brush so very rarely am I concerned about shooting for distance.
If I was trying to get the most accurate distance out of the 30-30 I would probably invest in the Hornady lever evolution ammo

I did see those at Cabelas yesterday for $15 a box. May go back and get a couple boxes. Heard of other people using them in other calibers so it may not be a bad choice.

I shoot 170gt federal blue box.
Any of the regular ol soft points in 150 or 170 work great.
Stay away from the squishy tips. I had some very poor results on 2 deer with them. Had to shoot one twice and the other 4 times. No exits.

That's mainly what I want I for and something a little more compact while hunting from a pirogue

Are you talking about the lever evolutions? I shoot fusions out of my 30-06 and had good luck with them. I wonder how those compare to the corelokts and blue box federals?

Yea the lever evolution. They suck arse. Every one I shot had core/jacket separation and terrible penetration. They might be alright for long range but they're garbage for close range.
Federal fusion would work fine. Use whatever the gun likes. A

You can't go wrong with Corelokts, Winchester power points, or federal blue box bullets of either 150, or 170 grain. Choose two or three boxes of these and go shoot em. Hunt with the ones which make you happy accuracy wise. My Marlin is one of those rifles that shoots every ammo I've ever tried very well, so I just use Winchester 170's because that's what the stores have most of on the shelf.
I feel the same way as Downshiftandfloorit does. I have hunted with the Leverevolutions.
I'm not impressed with them. The regular old soft points will kill deer just perfectly as long as you're not asking the 30-30 to be what it's not. If our lease didn't have long open pipelines, my 30-30 would probably be my only deer rifle.

I use 170 grain Core-Lokts and have never had an issue. Shot a 10 point buck and a big doe the same day with them a few weeks ago.

Core lokt and Federal Fusion, 150 grain. My gun may like the fusion just a tad better, Marlin.

Thanks. Sounds like can't go wrong with the ones mentioned. Guess I'll pick up a box of each on see what my gun likes.

Hey, just to let you know I re-read my post & edited to say my gun likes the fusion. Did not mean to imply that your gun would.

Not a problem. Gonna pick a few and go to the range.

My Marlin 336 likes the Core-Lokt 150gr.

The venerable 30-30 benefits from >120 yrs of bullet evolution. Consequently, today's 30-30 loads work pretty well.

You're dealing with a cartridge that is over a century old and still has to function in guns that are over a century old without blowing them up. Yeah I know it still kills deer, but why spend money on a gun that will always be hampered or handicapped by old tech ammo.
Think 7-08.

I been having this gun for years and I would like to get some use out of it. Cabelas had the Nikon 3x9x40 BDC rifle scopes on sell for $89 regular $189 and I had gift cards. So why not !

Nothing at all wrong with the 30-30. I love carrying a short lever gun when I'm hunting thick woods where I have a chance of a short, quick, shot. (I alternate between a Marlin 336 or 1895) Like others have said, Remington, Winchester, Federal, Hornady etc. all make good ammo for them. 30-30 ammo is relatively inexpensive also. I'd stay away from the Monarch ammo from Academy, it hangs up in my Marlin. Everything else runs fine.
