1/ What's the magic number as far as how many yards? I've heard some say set it for 50 and you're good and others say 25...

2/ How do you know what adjustments to make at 150 yards or whatever distance over 100?

3/ Does it vary by caliber?

Depends on the bullet and the caliber...

Like Wick said, depends on the round you are shooting. You can get a good idea by looking at the balistics chart for the caliber and round you are firing.

There is no magic number except the one you choose.

Depends on optic, bullet weight, load data, etc...

Not only by caliber, but bullet weight, powder charge, etc...

You can get overly complicated with this...

I recommend you sight in at 100 yards. Sighting in at 25 or 50 can be less trustworthy. If you sight in at 100, depending on caliber, make poi 1 to 2 inches high and you can put the crosshairs on an aninal and make a good shot between 0 and about 220 with no adjustments.

Dam, so it is pretty complicated. Well guess time-consuming would be a better term. Shoot different ammo at different ranges.

I have a 270 and was thinking about maybe going try to hunt pigs.

Thanks for the responses.

What is your barrel length and what is your ammunition choice?

I'd also say that how far you sight in is dependent on what type of land you hunt. If you sight in at 2 inches hight @ 100 yards, that sets you up nice for 200-250 yard shots with most loads out of a .270, but your going to be 2.5-3 inches high from the barrel out to 100 yards. I hunt land just south of Vicksburg, and it is steep hills/hardwoods. I have never even had a chance to shoot a deer over 75 yards there. I sight in dead on 50, so if i need to be precise at short range, or just want to be to save meat, i can.

Set 1" low at 25 to get close and 1" high at 100 yds will be good out to 200 yds. I set most of my guns up like this.

I get mine dead on at 50 then move to 100... Like others said, the bullet will make a difference so just sight it in with something similar to what you hunt with.

Pretty much what I do... Although I don't think there is a shot at my place that could be taken at 200 yards.

LINK To Ballistics Calculator
Go to this site, and plug in all the data for your cartridge (bullet weight, velocity, etc.), the distance you want it zeroed at, and the height of your crosshairs above the bore centerline -- it'll tell you the trajectory at any distance.

For example, if you want it to be zeroed at 150 yards, it'll tell you where the bullet should be hitting at 50 yards (relative to your crosshairs).

And it will tell you how many inches high, or low, the bullet will be at any distance, based on the foregoing.

I shot a deer yesterday evening at 250 yds hit him good. Ran towards me 30 or 40 yds so I put another one in him. He dropped after the second shot. He probably would have dropped after the first but wasn't talking any chances.

I usually start at 50 yards or so and get it real close. Then back up to 100 yards and sight it for about an inch high. I shoot a 270WSM.
For hunting you don't really have to shoot a bunch of different loads and brands to find the "best" round. IMO knat's arse accuracy isn't really required.

Unless I'm meat hunting on food plots, My longest shot would be 75 yards tops. I haven't even shot my rifle since last summer... Been putting in work with the Matthews the last 2 years.

Killed my first deer with a bow last year and never looked back. I always say I would bust out the rifle late if I hadn't killed anything, but haven't had that problem yet.

I shoot a .300wsm and sight in 1.5 high. Pretty much good out to 270-300 yards with no or little adjustments (In my case, holdover).

Only hunted deer a few times, YEARS ago so don't really have a preference in ammo, yet. Not sure on barrel length.

Sight it in a whatever distance you want and shoot it over a chronograph.

Plug all that info into the ballistic calculator that was, jbmballistics, and go.

Its actually pretty simple.

Id shoot 10 rounds over the chrono to get a good average velocity.

The 1" high thing or 2" low thing works some of the time, but its not really a good way to do it.

Oh yeah, let me go climb up in the attic and grab my chronograph real quick......

The windage (left/right) is more critical than height when deer hunting. Just sight it in for 150 yards. An inch off at 25 yards will be 8" off at 200 yards. You'll be a few inches high at 100 yards, and a few inches low at 175. That's plenty good enough for the kill zone on a deer. Most people can't hit anything past 200 yards and you'll rarely shoot that far in Louisiana anyway.
