200HP Diesel Outboard

I was a on a CC that had twin 70hp diesel tohatsus (?). They were the noisiest things ever, had to yell to be heard while driving and needed ear protection ….. Slow too. Would I buy nope nope nope .

I have driven a few smaller diesel outboards. It helps if it is a tender and the mother ship uses diesel as well.

So that CC was cranking a double tohster?
The article list no advantages over a gas engine, only that they will be more expensive.

Just guessing, but I would imagine diesel outboards would offer better fuel efficiency and longer service life over an outboard. Though with the current cost of fuel, the efficiency of a diesel may not matter. Also, don't have to worry about ethanol in diesel.

I don't see any way this is a good deal unless you really, really want/need longer service life.
Even then, I doubt it'd be worth it.

Just coming up with advantages. Obviously there isn't a huge market or they would already be all over the market.
Maybe the commercial guys who log thousands and thousands of hours on their motors. The article doesn't really give much other than the fact that they are being produced. I'm sure there is an intended market.

Yeah I would guess the same thing, none of that is mentioned in an article though. With ethanol free getting harder to get a hold to it's a good thought, but ethanol free is still cheaper than diesel at the moment

There's a market for it in charter boats, inland crew boats, work boat, etc.
I don't think you'll ever see one hanging off the back of a bass boat. It has no advantage over a gasser other than higher duty cycle and time between overhauls. Not too many people ever run an outboard to overhaul hours.

Meh. You see plenty of aluminum work boats running around the spillway and river docks with outboards. Those guys could get some use out of this. Plenty of boats just aren't big enough for C7's or QSB6.7's. This would probably be much cheaper and takes up much less hull space. There's applications for it. I just think they're too limited to support the product.
Who knows though. People may get turned on by turbo whine and diesel fumes on their bay boats. I maintain that no sane person would want one on a bass boat.
