I like to go once a week in the summer, but this summer I've only gone about 5 trips. Last week I was out in Llano chainsawing mesquites. The spindle weld on my axle had cracked back in May and my replacement axle was on backorder for a few weeks which delayed some engine work so June was pretty much shot. Was neck deep in work the first part of July. I'm definitely not on the fish right now.

I have a full boat this Saturday if weather permits, but I'll let you know if that changes. I like burn some weekday vacation here and there to avoid crowds as well. I'm no pro. Sometimes I get them and sometimes not.

I would expect a $300 service bill every hundred hours for the motor. As far as use expense on a bay boat with modern 4 stroke. I would figure $40 for fuel, $40-50 live bait, $50-100 for booze/food/ice. That seems about right for a day trip with multiple people on board. You probably won't find a used seller with service reports and many mechanic shops can only tell you what was done going off of invoices. I was quoted $360 to perform a leak down test with report for twin 175's (just sold an offshore catamaran)

Your numbers arent too far off, but...

You will want new tackle more often, better rods and reels, upgrade electronics at least once, maybe a new trolling motor along the way, maybe add a powerpole, a new radio and some better speakers...

Maybe a new seat... Just seems there's always something.

If you happen to have a good friend that you get along great with, and like to fish with, going in halves makes the dollars much less painful.

All that said... Do it! Try to buy it right so you can get out easily if it becomes too much.

been having the itch to get a little 15/16 ft aluminum boat with like a 40/50 hp motor to take to the basin. I only live 30 minutes from magee's. that would be ideal. anyone have a little setup like that? I figure that scenario would be little upkeep cost.

We live in the same neighborhood

Currently boatless as well but I'd be interested in getting in on this action:

Happy to tow your boat and cover your gas - like use my credit card to fill up your tank after a trip, not throw you $5.

If you want to keep a top of the line boat top of the line, I've heard 20% of the cost a year is a good estimate and I'd say thats close if you have an open checkbook for someone else to do all the work.

Given that, my dad has a 19 ft bay boat with a 115 yamaha and he spends less than $500/ year outside of his storage costs. We do all the work ourselves, the boat ramp is 5 minutes away, and we use maybe 5 gallons of gas a trip on avg.

Fishing is not that expensive if you don't want it to be, but you can make it as expensive as you want.

This is where I get lost. What are you fixing yearly to reach this number? Assuming you had no motor issues or lower unit destruction, what parts are failing?

It cost me close to 500 bucks for a full weekend of fishing. Every. Single. Time.
