Since I cant seem to make up my mind for myself, I'll poll the OB.

Which Shotgun should I buy? It will be used mainly for duck hunting. I have been looking at: SBE2, A400, SX3, Maxus, and Versamax. There are plenty of lovers and haters of each out there, lets hear from the OB.

All of those guns are nice and you'll find people will have strong opinions about each. Get the one that fits/points the best to you. If you can, shoot each one.

You need to go shoulder the guns to see which ones fit you better and narrow down the list...

I shoot a Browning, but of those guns listed, the SBE2 feels the best to me. Mostly because it has a slim grip and feels small in my hands. The grip on the Remington is also slim, but the Versamax's that I've shot didn't feel as smooth.

Among those choices -- the Beretta A400.

Then you still have to decide which model, bbl length, etc.

I shoot several cases throgh mine before I bother to clean it. You'll probably treat yours better, but the point is they just don't jam.

The Berettas (and probably most other guns) come with a set of shims to let you adjust the fit (drop and cast), so I wouldn't pay too much attention to which gun "off the rack" fits best.

A400 also comes with swivel studs that allow you to attach a sling. I presume most of the others you listed have swivels, too.

I am a Beretta man, so I say A400, BUT like others said, shoulder a few up and swing them. Like Palo said he like the slim grip, I like a larger grip on the forestock, all personal preference.

As far as shouldering and sightline are concerned, take a good look at the A5....instant sightline when you shoulder due to the humpback.

I have been shooting a Beretta for several years. Probably stay with the Beretta but out of respect I had to purchase one of the new Browning A5 shotguns. It points great. I will have a full review at the end of January if I duck hunt any this year.

Beautiful gun. Nothing points like an old hump back.

I've not shot the Beretta, but everything I hear about it is positive. Some of the older Beretta's (Urika for instance) felt like a boat paddle in my hands, but I've got a buddy that just bought one an loves it.

If $ are not an issue, I like the idea of a Versamax. I use a Beretta 391 SA.

If you stay with the 3 B's you will get a great gun, as far as which one is best, it becomes subjective. As stated above shoulder each of them and get the one that fits you best. I went into the store ready to buy the bretta, but I shouldered the browning and it just felt better to me, and I love it, is it a better gun than the bretta or vice versa NO, it is just better for me

I have an SBE2 and a Beretta 390 as a backup. If I had to pick one, it would be the Beretta. I say this because the thing refuses to jam and doesn't need be babied.

I see this hitting 20 pages minimum.

I'll take the under.

In all honesty it doesn't really matter. I shoot a Berretta at ducks, browning for dove and will be buying a Benelli Legacy or Montefeltro Silver soon. The Montefeltro may be the smoothest semi auto gun I have ever shot.

Versamax.

I have not shot one but have been in the blind with one on 2 different occasions. Both times something minor happened that made hunting with the gun a pain in the arse. I realize this doesn't mean all of them have problems but like the old saying does "You never get a second chance at first impressions"

I have stated this in a few scatter piece threads, but my #1 reason for not getting rid of my 390 for another gun is the rotating bolt head that most are using now (including Beretta).

It is purely personal to me and not dogging the design, I have just been in conditions (cold+dirty gun) where that sucker didnt make the full turn and lock, leaving me with a "click" and greenhead shite on my face.

If you think about it these threads are humorous. Think about what you grandpa hunted with compared to todays shotguns. The technology of modern duck guns is far superior to any of those old guns. An old A5 was the cats arse back then and is still a great platform but there are guns out there today that will walk circles around it.

I still love an A5 though
