Hypothetically, lets say that no oil comes to shore in Gulf Shores or that the oil has been cleaned off the beach, how many of you think it would be safe to swim in come August? I know alot of you work in this industry and that this oil is not refined/naturally occuring BUT is it safe to be in constant contact with? I worry about the carcinogens but damn I love getting in the water at home.....just curious.

Yes, if there's no slick.

What carcinogens are you worried about specifically? The only one I can think of at the moment is benzene. However, benzene is a light hydrocarbon and will be one of the first molecules to degrade from the spill. So I don't think benzene will be a lingering concern after the spill is cleaned up.

So, in theory if the leak is stopped the benzene should be gone by August. I understand that dilution is the solution to pollution but it still makes me wonder about swimming in an oil soup...I trust the posters on this board who have worked with stuff for years over CNN....thanks

Think about the size of the gulf.....then think of relatively tiny amount of oil being released into it.

I'm approx 32 miles west of where the horizon blew and I flew out of Venice and have yet to see any signs of the slick. I know its there but just to let you know that the media will have you believe the whole gulf is covered, well its not. But it still is a pretty big deal.

No, Gulf Shores/Destin are the only Gulf water I've entered in twenty years. Then again, I've not cared for False River or Tickfaw or dirtied Biloxi type water since high school. I'm probably not eating from the Gulf for the next few years either..will not trust the product nor it's inspectors.

Loaded up the freezer from Tony's last week, should last the remainder of the year.

Will buy Pacific Mahi at Sams, or dine at Bonefish, Flemings, etc..

There are worse things in the gulf. I believe the alcohol content in the gulf near grand isle is at least .004%

This is why fishing is so good down there.

I've swam in the Red River at Shreveport, I'm sure I could handle the Gulf water.

But yeah... I'm planning on hitting the beach somewhere around Sarasota this summer, possibly Siesta Key.

You boys plan on substituting fried tarballs for hushpuppies with those shrimp this summer?

I think I'll go Mahi, Wahoo, Halibut, and Snow Crab legs this next year..wait for the Gulf to get back to normal.

haha...no difference there i guess. we used to spend summers at a ropeswing in bham growing up that was a few hundred yards from some kind of sewage/water treatment station. years later i guess that's why we were all sick the first couple of times going there....good times.

I never swim in the Gulf.

So I guess I'm good in that respect.

That said, I'd like to be able to breathe when I'm laying out next week in Orange Beach.

Just FYI, I hijacked my husband's account to ask this.....That being said I am a nurse and I asked a few docs I work with what their opinion was. Keep in mind these are California MD's which are an entirely different breed. Their response was that the Santa Barbara spill in 1969 kept people out of the water for almost 10 years due to the posting by state govt. that the waters contained known carcinogens. Out of 4 docs, everyone of the said they would not let their children in the Gulf with the amount of oil spilled. I am not a chicken little...I am just repeating what was said. My guess is, after a few drinks, I will take my chances....hell I smoked for 10 years so whats the difference?
