I truly don't. They seem rather arrogant about it IMO.

So they haven't set up a hotline for people to call in & suggest ideas?

Yes turning down James Cameron was a huge mistake

He's the only public example we know of and I was using it as a point that no telling who else they might have turned down.

Cameron said he has offered to help the government and BP in dealing with the spill. He said he was “graciously” turned away by the British energy giant.

Wait, didn't Obama come on TV and say all decisions lie with him?

I can't understand why this scenario was never considered before this accident happened. We have the technology to send a man to the moon. But we are completely unprepared to deal with a broken pipe because it's miles below the water surface?

Seems like nobody ever even thought about solutions if something like this were to happen. Why?

Cameron is a moron if he thinks that depth is the problem. BP knows that. Ixtoc I was in only 160 feet of water.

The wildlife people scooped them up after they were filmed. It's still very difficult to watch though.

Depth is a non factor? Got it!

So if this were in 100 ft of water it would still be gushing?

I feel like everyone in this thread is right.

The government is not qualified to plug the well. Only companies that do this for a living are (read: BP).

BP set up the hotlines and junk, but let's be honest, they won't take advice from a nobody like me. They know their equipment and wells best, and they believe that they will be the ones to fix.

The gov't needs BP to fix it.

I have friends that work for BP (honestly, I do), and believe me, they want this fixed worse than anyone else. However, I still think they are being a little arrogant about who they take advice from - probably not even listening to some people in their own organization.

This is a shitty situation. We can't fix it easily (see the ixtoc well).
