I get it, especially for lower elementary. When my kids were in 2nd-4th grade, it wasn’t uncommon to get home from work and have to help them with an hour plus of homework. I don’t get it for middle school and up. Parents sharing this seem to ignore the fact that some of their kids waste so much time in class that teachers have no choice but to have them complete it for homework. It could just be my anecdotal experience, but Americans seem to be growing less and less concerned about education.

I don't see how you can look at our current educational system, compare it to the rest of the developed world, and think it's perfectly fine.

Homework is important, but they also seem to issue far too much of it these days. So I guess I’m kind of in the middle on it. But the post itself is too dismissive of it IMO, and that parent is likely teaching their kid bad values.

The person posting obviously doesn't have an AP kid. A lot of that AP content in high school can't be covered within the timeframe of a school day and often involves some self-study time outside of class.
Also, color me suspicious that they're actually teaching their kid "life skills". A local news station posted one of those "what do you think should be taught in school" things the other day and the sheer number of people saying shite that PARENTS should be teaching their own kids was hilarious.

Here’s the thing about homework. Imagine little Billy trying to learn a skill, let’s say reading. But the only time it is really happening is the one time a week Billy is called on to read in front of the class. Now imagine little Jenny does all her reading homework every night like she’s supposed to.
Who is going to have that skill mastered and who is going to have a learning disability by fourth grade?
Homework has its place. Kids have been getting assigned homework for generations for a reason.

I had, on average, at least 1.5 hours of homework during middle school and high school. Why do kids need so much help these days? The only "help" I got was my parents telling me to get it done!
Hell with all of the info available "on the line" these days, homework should be a breeze!

I saw that today as well. People are always going to bitch about something.
While I get it- sometimes homework can be too much- but god forbid a parent consider helping their kids grasp a concept from one of their courses as family time.
I’ve found on my social media feeds, those sharing this are also the same who share other simple minded world views.

Good grief, if you want your kids to be successful you have to teach them good study habits when they're young.
I am eternally grateful to my wife for spending extra time with my daughter on homework.

I’d say until middle school, that should be the norm. Exceptions withstanding of course.. once more comprehensive exams and difficult subjects requiring practice and reinforcement are needed then homework/studying should be expected. Reality is that kids aren’t the same, some need more work at home and some just don’t need any..

Isn't helping your kids with homework also a great way to bond? It was family time in my household growing up.

I'll admit, this is me as a parent. Thankfully my wife (no pics) is pretty intelligent and can help on most things. I never received help with homework or studying growing up, probably why I'm in the spot I'm in with helping my own kids. When wife is too tired or busy they are on their own.
ETA: Except science and history, I can teach the hell out of those to the kids

Oh, it’s anything but fine. Unless there is a major overhaul to the system soon, it’s doomed. Everything stated publicly as a standard is nonsense. The bar has been lowered to ground level, and more and more kids simply refuse to step over it. They fully understand that they will be passed on anyway, so why even make the effort to step over the bar.

Schools waste massive amounts of time and are far too willing to place the burden of education on parents and out of school work. Certain subjects like math probably require consistent homework. Most subjects should not require extensive out of class work.
I don’t particularly have an issue with well designed homework assignments, but far too much homework is due to busy work for the sake of busy work or ineffective and inefficient teachers/administrators.
So, I don’t 100% agree with the meme, but I understand the sentiment.

I feel pretty lucky. My kids go to a top 10 ISD in all of Texas and in 7th grade, and they've never had actual assigned homework that takes them more than 10 minuets to do.
