A whole lot of very disturbing truth in that article. I am sharing with friends.

I work a 35-40 hour work week, but it is on salary and I get to work from home 1-2 days a week. Since it’s salary, if I get my work done I just go home or go play golf. I’m not making hundreds of thousands of dollars, just around 65k at the moment so I’m not rich, but then again I am only 26.

Thing is, the people who run my company (and it’s a bigass fricking company), all worked their asses off to get where they are and making millions a year. I want that, I just haven’t committed to it yet. They spent 25 years to get there too and I’m not sure if I am ready to waste 25 years of my prime being miserable. We only get 1 life, I hate the fact I might waste a large chunk of it in an office building staring at a computer screen. It is for these reasons the fiance and I try to get away on weekends as much as possible and turn off the world around us, even if just a short drive to a nearby cabin or houseboat. It really helps to keep you sane.

If I could live on an island affordably and make what I make and have the same job security, I would do it in a HEARTBEAT. It’s just not feasible. I do hope to retire before most and move somewhere cheap and live out my days in peace watching sunsets with scotch in my hand. Don’t care if it’s a country house or a beach house.

My goal is to work hard so I can work my way up the ladder until I can afford to amass certain assets. I want a home on the water and a boat so my future wife and I can fish and go boating on the weekends or whenever we feel like it. I want to be able to afford to purchase over time enough revenue producing assets that I can "retire" early, relying on those assets for the bulk of my income later in life while moving into working on my own schedule for extra money, maybe as an adjunct professor, a consultant, or some kind of revenue producing hobby.

I know that it takes money to make money. You cannot become truly wealthy if all of your income is based on work you perform. I'm only 23, though, so I have a very long way to go.

This makes sense to me. What doesn't make sense is the 40-50 year olds I'm surrounded by that are still putting in 70 hr weeks with no intention to slow down. I overheard one of them say this morning that he couldn't sleep last night because all he could think about was coming in this morning and doing some work. I'll never be that guy. I'm just not wired that way.

I don't even think I have that much more to want either and I am only 27.

I do plan on starting my own business within the next couple of months though.

This. I will never be that guy. Deep down, I will always be the coonass who works just enough to support his family so he can have enough time to fish and chill out on his land. Work is a means to an end.

+1 a very fascinating read to say the least. I agree for the most part.

I will say large corporations WASTE much more money than we do at home. Some of their spend commodities are upwards of 200 million dollars annually, and they don't even give a shite about them...it's a drop in the hat to them, and oftentimes are not even monitored
