I just went to Waiemaia Canyon last month. Nowhere near the scale of the Grand Canyon but the highest point is around 4000 feet of elevation. There are a lot places with no fencing/guardrails. I can easily see how someone can trip/slip and end up at the bottom. One momentum is created, there's no stopping it.

I've been. Hiked the Bright Angel Trail. Basically there are ledges the entire time that are unprotected by guard rails. For the most part the trail is wide and it would be pretty hard to accidently fall off unless you were being careless...but, there were definitely parts where the trail narrowed and there were steep drops. At those parts...as I passed people I definitely tried to evaluate their mental health. All it would take is a good shove by a nut job...

I spent 5 nights hiking and camping in the Grand Canyon in April. While it is definitely possible to fall and plummet to your death, it takes some stupidity and bad luck to do so.

We visited when kids were 7 and 4. Went down a trail for about 100 yards. Turned right around and came back. No thank you.

Someone died there last week taking a selfie. It uses to be people who were subject of photo, " take one more step back so I can get that hawk in the frame". aaaaaahhhh

I am surprised more people don't plummet to their deaths there. When we took a trip out west last March, I saw so much incredible stupidity

If you want to talk about scary ledges, hike Angels Landing in Zion NP. The hike kicks serious arse, but there are stretches of terror.

I am surprised was only 400 feet. It looks like 1,700 feet. Must have landed on a ledge.

What's crazy is when you go there when there is still a lot of snow at the rim. You will see people slipping on the ice left and right. I always wonder if more people fall to their deaths then from slipping on ice. I saw a group of people start hiking down the Bright Angel trail.....not a single one wearing proper hiking shoes or shoes with attached cleats to be able to hike down an ice covered, slippery trail.

I've been hiking in the Grand Canyon five times and this coming October will be the sixth time. I damn near feel backwards off the the trail down by the Colorado River. I was probably only eight stories up from the river, but the rocks below would have fricked me up good if not killed me. My hiking poles saved my arse.

But truthfully, there are few places on the main trails where falling off the trail will kill you. Most places you will tumble about 10 feet and get stop by a boulder or a tree. Basically, you have to be off the trail to fall any significant height.

If I had kids, say around 10 years old, I wouldn't hesitate to take them hiking on any of the main corridor trails, including where this woman fell.

However there are trails where it's best not to tell your mama about or take kids on. Imagine walking on your house's slanted roof on top of the Sears Tower, with the trail being the width of your shoe.

Yep, the couple of times I've been I was amazed by the number of people doing stupid things. Lots of people sitting on tree limbs hanging over the rim to take pictures, standing right at the edge for pictures, etc. Easy to see why people die with a slip here or there.
