I don't understand people freaking out about a 9 year old driving?
My whole family all have been driving everything you can imagine, and all the kids have been driving stuff like that?
What's the big deal, as long as they're taught the right way it shouldn't be an issue.

A lot of vaginas in this thread. I was driving ATVs at that age. Teach them young and teach them right. shite like this happens, but the posters being all chicken little about it need to get out more.

You people berating the op either don't have kids or don't understand all children grow up in different surroundings. I had cousins growing up who lived out in the country and operated atvs at 8/9 and never got into a lick of danger. Just like allowing a child to shoot a gun, as long as he/she is responsible then no issue. It's all about knowing your kid.

I grew up out in the country and hit a tree with my Dad's jeep when I was around her age. Scared me to death, thought he would kill me. When he got home from what was probably a shitty day at work, he looked at everything and went inside. I thought I was dead. He came outside a few minutes later and asked me what I learned. He listened, filled in a few blanks I left out, hugged me and told me he loved me.

Seriously- have you checked the neutral switch on the Ranger? It shouldn't have started in gear like that for exactly the potential accident that happened here.
I don't have a Polaris, but we have a Deere and Kawasaki CVT (belt) transmission vehicles here and both of them WILL NOT start unless the shifter is in Neutral. Same goes for Kubota's RTVs as well.
This is NOT your daughters fault. Hug her and be thankful no one got hurt. There's a reason neutral switches are installed, and y'all just found out why.

All is well. Better than well. I sat her down and talked to her, told her I loved her. Asked her if she was scared. Explained to her how dangerous it could have been. Then she took a bath, found a shirt that she sleeps in that says "I (heart) my ------, because he's my dad", then asked my wife if she would go get me to lay with her as she goes to sleep, which of course I did.

I saw my brother wreck and die in an ATV accident when we he was 13. They can be very dangerous.
But, I wouldn't put this in that category. As a dad, I have apprehension about my oldest..he's almost 9 driving a go-kart or a golf cart around the farm….let alone anything more powerful. But, he's been taught how to operate it, and does very well.
If I were you I would explain the importance of safety, teach her the proper way to operate it, and maybe let her "help" you pay for it by working around the house. Then set some strict limits on when/where she can drive.
But, make no mistake…all ATV's can be deadly. Especially in the hands of kids.

I remember when I was around 8 I got a new go kart for Christmas. Dad took me out to a parking lot to ride around, and I started showing out and tried to come to a sliding stop right next to his truck. I ended up missing the break and hit his open driver side door at full speed. Which ended up bending it back quite a bit.
Dad didn't give two craps about his door when that happened.
