The Atkinson trilogy on the US Army in Europe is a good read.

The Second World War-Antony Beevor
Inferno-The World at War-1939-1945-Max Hastings

Both are good overviews of WW2 and are about 700 pages each.
I read them back-to-back. Talk about WW2 overload.....

If you're looking for an overview of the European Theatre, the Liberation Trilogy will provide it for you. I thought the Africa and Italy campaign books were better than the last book, but they are all good.

Ten Years and Twenty Days: Memoirs of Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz LINK

Written by Doenitz himself once he was released from 10 years in Spandau prison. He describes everything from the build up of the U boats post WWI to him taking over as the head of the German Navy to finally spending 20 days as the head of the German state once Hitler was pushing daisies.

The final chapters are an incredible look into the German head of states mind and the decisions that were made WRT the fall of the eastern and western fronts.

As a former submariner as well, the book was absolutely fascinating.

Atkinsons trilogy is very good but it's a lot to handle if you're looking for a good overview I would suggest Anthony Beevors book the Second World War

This may be hard to find but it would be worth it. Many years ago, Time-Life did a book set on WWII. It was one of those deals where you sign up and they send you a book a month until you've collected the entire set. I would guess that there's about 15-20 books in the set. Each one deals with a particular aspect of the war. If you can find it maybe in a garage sale or estate sale, I highly recommend it.

But WWII For Dummies is actually a great starting point. Very broad and readable.

I just finished Operation Paperclip. It was just written last year about the German. Scientist who came to America after the war. Well worth the read.
