Would you rather live in Japan or a safe part of South Africa?

Capetown or something. Living on the south african coast would be sweet with great fishing. Also, capetown, SA is where all the white people live, so it wouldn't be too much of an ethnic shock.
Anywhere else in SA though and I am choosing to live in Japan.

South Africa.
Not because I'm particularly worried about living in a cracker-dominated area, but simply because I've heard less than pleasant things about Japan in terms of xenophobia. I'm a super-cracker. 6'5, 186 lbs, blonde hair, green eyes, and a Viking beard. I would be like a sideshow.

Nah, you'd be fine. The same things you hear about xenophobia there are the stereotypes that they hear about racism in America, tbh.

Actually, despite their e-reputation, Japanese are surprisingly conservative when it comes to sex. Some posit that their oddities in obscene art/porn/etc. are probably self-expression to combat their sexual repressions

If you're white it's nbd from what I've heard. If anything you'd be more appealing as "exotic" (think like how we think of Latin Americans or Eastern Europeans). OTOH you'd probably catch some of that xenophobic flak if you're black, or a non-Japanese Asian. Seems like the sentiment is generally xenophobic with an exception for whites (probably due to close business+cultural ties with post-WWII America? I'm speculating at this point but that's my guess).
