It's already an iTunes gift card. Not like she can pay for dinner with it.

What are her other opitions? Some horrible pop song or vampire movie.

Buyers remorse is the best lesson she can learn.

Like Milk carton caps. Little cardboard circles. You collect them and play a game where you try to flip over the POGs by slamming one down on a stack of them. Big fad with kids in the mid-90s. You could've googled it.

When I was a kid, we didn't have iTunes gift cards.

You're better off deleting the app and telling her that your family does not do business with companies who hide micro transactions within a product.

I used to buy BS car magazines as a kid. I turned out alright. Relax pops.

Please don't use adults as your argument. Adults are idiots.

Let her do it. It's something she enjoys obviously and it won't hurt a single thing. And it will make your child happy. There are other lessons to teach but this isn't one of them. Not with a gift.

Buddy of mine is a DR. Patients always give him iTunes gift cards in little baskets. His Clash of Clans base is the BOMB!

He spends his on in game junk lol

I think it is a waste of money and I want to teach her the importance of not wasting her "money".

If she doesn't have the final say-so, then it isn't really her money. What kind of lesson is she going to learn from that?

I would offer to match what she spends on something more durable and smart, but leave the final decision to her if she wants to "waste" her money.

But, to your ultimate question - I think a parent should say no to illegal or unethical spending of a minor's money, but otherwise leave final decisions up to the child.

I'd probably go on a lengthy ramble about how back in my day I had to hike 15 miles through the snow to earn 3 cents a day. If she was still around when I ran out of steam I'd ask her to remind me what we were talking about and then start over from the beginning.

How old is she? If she is old enough to use whatever she is purchasing to have fun with, I say why not, that is what it is for IMO.

To be clear I personally think it is a waste, but I don't think kids today connect any value to it..because plenty of other options will be available if she spends it and dislikes what she buys with it, she probably wont give it a second thought.

I want to add that I have offered to buy her iTunes gift cards from her so she can use real money on something more tangible or longer lasting...she isn't digging that idea.
What percentage you threw at her? $0.75 on a dolla?

Chicken, do you let your kids browse TD? Specifically the OT?

I see your point, and do agree thats a waste of money.Tangible to me means something you physically have others may include an experience. Like a concert or paying for silly coins to continue playing a game online. Now having said all of that, it was given to her as a gift to do what she wants with it. She may regret it, she may not. In the grand scheme of things this is nothing. Pick and choose your battles with your kids.

Sounds as if you've lost this one already.
Let it go.

Having a big debate with my daughter, who wants to use an iTunes gift card she received for Christmas to buy play money on some Fashion app she plays.
What is the actual app called? Like what will she be buying on it?

Perfect opportunity to teach her about financial planning. When the next disney crack for kids thing comes out and she asks for money to pay for it, remind how she chose to use her gift card. When she is the only kid not playing it at school, the lesson will be learned.
