I can tell you from experience.
Dont
As a brand new bartender witnessing a guy berate his woman all night until he finally gets mad enough and backhands her almost off the stool. I react and knock the shite out of the guy.
When I make it from around the bar and meet the guy as he's standing back up to throw him out the chick starts wailing on my back and my head screaming for me to leave him alone he didn't mean it bullshite.
I tossed em both out.
Learned a lesson

not even if he is beating on her because she will turn around and sue you for trying to help her.
call cops if he is beating her, otherwise grab popcorn and a good seat and watch the entertainment

How will you know he initiated it? How will you really know any of the details? That's the problem with getting involved in someone else's business.
I was assuming I'm witnessing this go down. With no bearing on how it started, I'm not stepping in at all.

I get all the reasons being posted, but honestly, I don't think I could live with myself if I just sat and watched some dude pummel the shite out of some girl, and do nothing.
Now, just a little spat? I mind my own business. Guy pummeling chick? I intervene and take my arse whipping if that's the endgame. At least I sleep at night. And outside of the OT, I would bet most normal men would in some way intervene to protect a defenseless chick. At least I want to believe that.

Unless the chick is getting the absolute frick beaten out of her, people need to mind their own biz.

We stayed at the Caribbean at Disney, I walked up on a lady beating her husband with umbrella stroller while their little girl standing there crying.
They were not sober, I took stroller and asked then wth they were doing? If daughter had not present, I would have stopped and watched, laughing my arse off.

The only way I am stepping in is if the women is family.

A friend witnessed one outside metro a few years back, guy apparently swung at the girl KO'd her cold, then continued to beat her on the ground.
He jumped in, pushed the guy off her, he landed onto the pavement, got up, and a bunch of people held him back as the cops were called.
He ended up being sued by the couple (yes they stayed together) for pain and suffering amongst other things.
That's the world we live in, scummy lawyers.
