To spend more time with friends and family? Absolutely. You don't get to take it with you when you die and I've never heard of someone on their death bed thinking "You know, I wish I spent more time at work."

A few years ago I had a manager that needed to work less hours due to family situations - so he went to 4 days per week - and his pay/bonuses was adjusted by about 20%.
The thing that sucked was that if you left him a message at noon on Thursday it was a given that you weren't going to get a follow up till Monday

I'm a teacher. So I have a lot of time off.

If I'm working 40 hours a week during normal work hours, I'm not sure id need to work less hours per week. I'd go for making less money and having more vacation days though, if it was somewhat proportionate. I can't imagine having 2 more weeks of vacation and making only half as much but having 2 more weeks of vacation and losing 2-4 weeks in pay would be a reasonable trade

Sure, and I do. But it took decades before I reached this point.

Just get hurt at work, then its less money for no hours. If you want to be lazy, its the way to go. Its what I did.
Ever since I bought supplemental LTD so that now my employer's 60% of base would be accompanied by an additional ~20%, I've been trying to think of an injury that would both preclude me doing this job but also wouldn't hinder my ability to golf and drink beer. It's a hard puzzle to solve for a desk jockey.
Maybe some sort of frontal lobe damage that causes me to forget how to do the work but doesn't limit physical activity. I'll figure it out one of these days.

If I can afford to, yes.

I believe you should work your arse off in anticipation of a long and enjoyable retirement...

So you wanna work for a future that may never come? There is more to life than work
Posted on 8/25/15 at 7:09 pm to Spankum
This type of hard work is intrinsically good idea is something that I have trouble justifying. I've worked hard in jobs and the army but if spankum got the brain cancer tomorrow would spankum really be fired up about busting his arse? Not saying that you shouldn't work hard in your endevors but I question the idea that working hard is intrinsically good in and of itself.

This is a good idea. I can do neither right now. Maybe, MAYBE I can start golfing soon. Need to ask the doctor.

It all depends on what your goals/values are.
If you are single, and don't care to build a savings and are willing to live for the moment, so be it. As long as you can take care of yourself and aren't going to be a leach on society more power to you.
If you have a family and are putting your leisure above the comfort and well being of your family...
Personally, I work a lot. I make sure I'm not absent and actually spend a lot of time with the family, but I'm seldom doing nothing and often working during off times. Hard work doesn't hurt.

I couldn't disagree more. There are certain things in life that you can't put work above (family, etc.) but the thought that hard work isn't instrinsically good is ridiculous, IMO.

I generally work 70-80 hrs a week, I'd take a few less hours but probably not with a pay cut

I get paid hrly, so If thats what i wanted, i would do that... I tend to work more than i am required, bc i like money
Posted on 8/25/15 at 7:58 pm to To the Dome
I'd take a 50% pay cut if I could work 7 - 3 Monday through Friday.

I buy an extra week vacation for 150% of my salary, so I'm definitely in the yes crowd
