Precisely. The British had almost 60'000 casualties (and 1/3 of those dead) in a matter of hours at the Somme. It's mind blowing.
Yep. And that number includes almost 20,000 dead, most of which fell before lunch!
And for perspective, on that one day, the British lost more men than the US lost in the entire Vietnam War. Let that thought sink in for a moment. And that day was only the start of the Battle of the Somme. The Battle would go on for four months after the bloodbath of the first day.

quote:Why? Maybe political fallout resulted from loss to Germany, breeding a virulent form of nationalism, coupled with economic unrest bred by the stock market crash and the Great Depression.
why would England or the US be affected by that? Britain is a island empire and the US already had vast swaths of land.
Don't forget the real-time appeal Huey Long had among the discontents and disaffected in those years. Picture him and Charles Lindbergh leading a nationalist populist wave, not unlike a form of authoritarian fascism which we more typically associate with Italy and Germany.

I have the book Storm of Steel and I recommend it.

Addendum: The Nazis didn't really fire up the concentration camps to a major degree until '43 or so, when they realized they were fricked. Had they won 'early', I think there would have been a different outcome for the prisoners, but not likely a rosy one.
They were slaughtering hundreds of thousands of jews in their home cities and burying them in large mass graves from Poland to Lithuania and elsewhere from 38-41 before the camps were a "thing".
Complete annihilation of the race was a main goal from the initial invasion of Poland to the surrender almost a decade later.
ETA: Amazing thread and discussion guys
There are several good WW1 games. If you like FPS Verdun is top notch
