Yeah and it's so cool putting magnets on your cypress beams cause they're totally magnetic..... oh wait they aren't. I'm assuming the OP isn't a settler building a log cabin and he has access to modern materials. Go with the aluminum bro.

The Olde Mill in Baton Rouge does hollow box beams, beam wraps, hollow mantles, etc. They're made from re-engineered REAL wood and look really good once installed.
