This!

Although it's unfortunate that this "friendly fire" event occurred, it's does not absolve the fact that this wouldn't have occurred if not for the criminal act in the first place - the blame still lies solely on the perpetrators, not the Good Samaritan.

I wouldn't say solely, but mostly. Knowing your own abilities and/or skill set is a crucial part of getting involved with these situations.
