Well I know lots of people, one being my brother. He actually went to Iraq just as much with the National Guard(gulf war 2) than he did when he was active(gulf war 1).

Well for one TOPS is a state program, the military is federal..

When I went to college, there was no TOPS. You had a few choices. Earn a scholarship, join the military, get a loan, or pay for it your damn self.

And back then, nobody was whining about having your loan forgiven.

Oh, and getting a 17 on your ACT pretty much eliminated that scholarship idea right off. Don't you pretty much get a 17 for spelling your name correctly and filling in the right dots?

A 17 out of a possible 36? That's less than half....Even with a 17 you should be able to figure that out.

Score 50% on any test or for a class and see what grade you get.

God I hope we find a way to better train/identify/treat soldiers with PTSD.

Dude 2 a year for all reservists would be WAY lower than suicides among civilians per capita, but yes we do need to do more for PTSD.

In what other ways do you admire these countries?

I have friends that currently live in Germany and have thoroughly toured Europe over my years. The economies of these particular countries are in top notch shape, their healthcare systems are excellent, amazingly low unemployment and poverty rates (Finland's unemployment is a little high but 2nd lowest poverty rate) and as far as best quality of life which takes into consideration factors of housing, average income, jobs, community involvement, education, environment, civic engagement, etc. All 3 of these countries rank ahead of the U.S. so there is plenty to admire.

Seriously.... aren't they all in the middle of an immigrant crisis right now?

Yes, they are having some issues of dealing with the mass influx of migrants from war torn middle eastern countries and they are working on solving these problems. The main problem is finding food and shelter for these families in need. If you are implying that because of the 3, 4 or 5 negative stories you may have heard of about some 2 million or so people makes the people themselves the crisis then you need to get a better understanding of math and percentages.

But you probably want to give this country to ISIS because it's just as much theirs as ours.

Nice red herring and ad hominem attack loaded with BS and completely lacking of facts...I will explain these big words to you.

"A Red Herring is a fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented in order to divert attention from the original issue."

Ad hominem attack is an argument or reaction directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining.

I just love your use of past tense here.

HIGHER education is privilege, not a right, IMO.

A lot of people do not grasp this concept. However, the plethora of student aid programs and bullshite degrees has really cheapened the value of a college education. What job twenty years ago required a high school diploma now requires a college degree.

agreed, but this is also the fault of the education-banking industry. They've been running the biggest sham in the world for years now making parents and students believe a college degree was the key and necessary to being successful. those who bought into the sham were more than willing to borrow money to enroll. Now people are realizing its a sham, but they're in debt up to their eyeballs.

All the regular service SM's that became sick call Rangers to get out of deployments too. TPU's can be dealt with, RA dirtbags get dumped on the Reserves though.

Finland and Danish governments have free college because they either tax near 50% or require short stints in the military and sometimes both

All true but except for Denmark those are flat tax rates on income and the averages are the same from like $60k per year and above. In the U.S. once you figure in all Fed, state, local, SS and sales tax we are right at 39.6% average per individual according to LINK , go ahead and wind up with all your "Socialist" and "Communist" snowballs but I for one have no problem paying another 10% on a regular basis and know I will never have to worry about a kids college savings, medical emergencies or even elderly care for your parents or yourself when the time comes. Plus those numbers do not include how much you currently pay for health insurance which is right back in your pocket in this situation. If believing strongly in "United we stand and divided we fall" makes me a socialist then so be it!

Military should be for people who actually WANT to be in the military. The GI bill is just icing on the top.

For some reason, tons of my high school friends went into the National Guard and Reserves specifically for the GI bill. Most signed up right before 9/11. I don't think any of them actually made it to college.

should be a requirement for Pell grant and student loans too, while you're at it.

I don't doubt that. What I'm saying is a number of reserves gladly take the benefits never imagining they'd have to actually fight or get deployed to a dangerous location. I understand their fear but that's part of the deal.

A lot of kids probably should join the military. Maybe military service should be compulsory like in Israel.
