With all the talk about TOPS being cut why is no one suggesting the military?

When i graduated high school, I had a full ride to McNeese. But i didn't want to go to McNeese. I wanted to go to LSU. So instead of taking out a loan, I joined the military.
Post 9-11 GI bill benefits are amazing. A very generous monthly housing allowance, a book stipend plus tuition that would cover any public institution in Louisiana. There are some really good schools out there offering really good degrees online (Arizona State offers a great online engineering program), so you could do your service, and realistically have a degree at the end of your enlistment. And have 4 plus years of work experience in a stressful environment.

What's with all the whining about free education out there? Why are young people afraid to earn it like so many others before them have?

Because you have a whole lot of people who think a degree should be given to them instead of earned.

They do some serious marketing too. Hear commercials for their online programs all the time in Lafayette.

Because the public thinks education is an inalienable right. Same with health care and defense. But i did the same and have a degree with no student loans.

Well for one TOPS is a state program, the military is federal...

I think it is from K-12, hence "public schools". Every CHILD should have some sense of an education for our country to improve and grow.

HIGHER education is privilege, not a right, IMO.

I think the OP is suggesting that instead of whining about TOPS, serve a hitch and get your free education that way.

Millenials want something for nothing. They don't want to deny themselves a $12 expresso every day in order pay off their loans, and the majority of millennials do not want to serve their country but want their country to serve them. That is why.

Baby boomers raised us and instilled these values in us.

I say "us" because I'm a millenial, but I work hard in my cubicle every day while getting my MBA at night and have less than 15k in student loans.

Speaking of whining, all of the weekend warriors getting all the education and living benefits you described whined tremendously when they were actually called upon to serve overseas. That's part of the equation but they didn't feel they should have to go.

Because they have already cut the military down to pre WW2 levels. Not to mention the state doesn't fund the military. That is the job federal government.

Oh the millennial problem is 100% baby boomers fault but that is not what this thread is about.

Well I'm pretty sure the majority of the "whining" was coming from kids already in college and had planned their finances around TOPS

Huh?

The military has been listed as an alternative in many of the threads on the topic.
