A "crossover SUV" is a rebranded station wagon.

In my experience, women get really mad when you try and explain this to them.

A friend of mine's mom had one with rear facing seats one of those retractable covers that you could pull out to hide your stuff. we used to ride under the cover and roll around in the dark. Sounds kind of homoerotic now that I typed it out.

Yes. Yes they do. "It's an awesome Stationwagon"
--"It is NOT a station wagon, it's an SUV based on a car"

Umm.... station wagon.

Hell old station wagons had ladder frames and were more truck like than current real SUVs, if only they had 4wd.

My dad had two taurus wagons and we loved sitting in the back of it as kids.

At least they were rear wheel drive. Can't say that for most SUVs today.

i'd say they are back in style already. i see outbacks all over the place now, and honestly i think they look pretty good...and they have a solid reputation.

Front wheel drive is actually safer for the average driver. I am a rear wheel lover myself, but front wheel drive with the weight over the drive wheels is much safer.

If they made a 4x4 station wagon, I would buy it right now.

True.

I was just adding on to this:

AWD. Wagons generally have low ground clearance and probably wouldn't do much good in 4WD conditions anyway.

Not the same. Besides, Subaru is a hipster car.

Pontiac was pretty damn close to coming out with a couple of interesting variants of their G8 model before they went under:

Utility:

love that wood paneling though.

"woodies" used to actually be made of wood. surf board on top.

your 50's versions were fake wood.

we used my SUV to cart the paddle board out to the lake. same function as "woodie" with surf board.
wiki woodie (see 1940 Pontiac Torpedo)
quote:

A woodie is a car body style with rear bodywork constructed of wood framework with infill wood panels. Originally, wood framework augmented the car's structure. Over time manufacturers supplanted wood construction with a variety of materials and methods evoking wood construction — including infill metal panels, metal framework, or simulated wood-grain sheet vinyl (DI-NOC) bordered with three-dimensional, simulated framework. In 2008, wood construction was evoked abstractly on the Ford Flex with a series of side and rear horizontal grooves.[1]
