and all of that is only good if the US economy is functional. China is a manufacturing leader sure, and what good is that if the US cant/wont buy their goods? Russia is a resource leader but cant feed itself.

Way to try to sidetrack the thread.
FWIW, the good old USA is doing fine in the natural resources department. China is importing plenty from allies of ours, and although Russia has oil and gas we have plenty too. In fact, Russian O&G is being hurt quite a bit by the fracking taking place here.

This is just "one of those things" I would be SHOCKED if Russia stranded American astronauts up there, or let them rot in Siberia when they did get back on Earth.

Why? The Russian Soyuz program has a fair better safety record than the shuttle did.
There is a Soyuz capsule docked at the ISS at all times for emergency egress, they can leave the ISS any time they want. The capsule can only carry three, that is why there are never more than three people on the ISS at any time.

There are currently only 3, that mission is comprised of two parts, crew of 3 in each half. But actually I should have said if there is only one capsule docked there can only be three people, they could have two capsules docked and have 6 people on the station.

Wait, 1940, the US economy was doing great? Read a history book and understand we were far from great in 1940. The war and some programs by FDR (nothing to do with healthcare but actually providing jobs to the unemployed) helped turn this country around from the greatest economic crisis in the world but it wasn't until after 1944 when it all started to shift.

apparently having abundant resources or massive manufacturing capabilities is all russia and china need. A consumption outlet for those resources or a consumer for those manufactured goods is not necessary

This is the correct answer. Soyuz is very 70's and cramped and all that. But it does get people into orbit and back down again safely. When you do the same thing over and over for 40 years with minor tweaks you tend to get reliable results even if you aren't trying to improve anything.

Honestly, the world economy is collectively screwed. If you take any of the major players out, the whole thing crumbles for everyone. Yes, the world central banks led by our Federal Reserve have been slowly destroying the economy with boom and bust cycles for the past century now. Competitive capitalism with endless growth and consumption is on its last legs. It is unsustainable and basically finished. That is a good thing but the transition to something new is going to suck.

The threats are now coming about leaving our guys up there. I doubt it will happen but it looks like I was right to be concerned before any of the news outlets considered this possibility.
