I have to correct part of my OP. The ride was actually for 77 miles. They charged $350 for the distance, $5 for toll and $157 for time. The start and end addresses were the same - some house in the Bronx, NY. Looked like a run down area on Google Street View.

Why cancel the card? Did they steal her card # or just get her password? I'm pretty sure if they stole the card they would have charged a 4D big screen.

I read online that when hackers get control of your Uber account they sometimes change the password and lock you out of it and keep charging rides to your card. Obviously no one wants that. So we just cancelled her card and ordered a new one. Although I am not sure how Uber will give us the refund now since they can't put it back on the card.

undoubtedly, some retard bought the password from a black hat who used a Brute attack on her account. It's very easy to do and then if you hoard the passwords you can sell them (5-10 at a time) on the B market for decent to fair prices.

The driver is going to be pissed when he loses that fare. If thats how it works?

When we opened the app after getting the email receipt, it wouldn't allow us to do anything without first giving feedback to the driver. Obviously we were pissed and ended up giving him a 1 star just so we could get into other parts of the app. I hope Uber doesn't hold that against him and voids the rating.

Uber should Institute a policy of verifying the passenger's identity before beginning the ride.

This!!! It is just like the folks at the check out counter at Macy's or other stores at the mall asking for an ID when you tell them you are paying by credit card. It can't be that hard a policy to institute.

If you claimed fraud and cancelled the card, Uber doesn't get the money. There is no money for them to refund.

Contact Uber. They might give you a credit for your trouble. It's not like they care about the drivers.

So some people have mentioned it, but you didn't respond. How simple was your wife's password?

Obviously shouldn't happen to you, but just like leaving your wallet around sometimes you're setting yourself up for failure.

I wouldn't put the new card number on the Uber account. I wouldn't use that Uber account for awhile or at all. You do have some control over the situation here. Use it.

Some credit card companies have identified "red zones" where fraud is so high, they won't issue cards to addresses in those zones. However, they can't stop someone from using a card in one of those zones.

The other posters are right - just report the fraud to the credit card bank and let them handle it from there. You don't have to pay for the ride.

Pretty naive dude, my first thought would be the driver was the one who was defauding you. Most likely he bought the password and charged the ride, esp. with the pick up and drop off being the same address.

My wife has two passwords that she uses everywhere. One is just a bunch of letters. The other one is the same letters followed by a few numbers. For her Uber account she used the password without the numbers in it, so obviously it was easier to hack. I am trying to get her to change all her passwords to include some special characters along with letters and numbers to make them more robust. Hopefully that prevents situations like this.
