Is this common? I was going to get my wife some earrings for a gift. She says she is allergic to all metals except gold. Is this a real thing?

Yep, my wife, daughter, and MIL can’t wear fake cheap earrings.

I'm allergic to them all even if they are gold, as far as I recall. I let them close up years ago.
same. Real gold balls were my first earrings and it was a major ordeal- red and itchy. I was in elementary school. I remember after they healed trying gold teddy bears. Same result.

It’s possible

I have seen people on the watch forums talk about allergies to certain metals / materials in alloys

Primarily that is nickel and to a lesser degree cobalt. The watches that usually get people are Rolexes. The newer ones (post 1985) use 904L which is much higher in nickel than the typical 316L which has about half the nickel compared to 904L.

Useless watch trivia: Omega was the first company to use 904L steel in their 1972 Ploprof but abandoned it when they stopped making the 1st gen Ploprof.

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but I’ve found titanium doesn’t irritate my ears like everything else does. You can replace the hooks of dangly earrings with titanium ones from Amazon. Or look for post earrings made from that

I think her allergy is getting weaker, mine is only a light brown.

Get her some implant grade titanium ones with a moissanite stone, they are cheap, pass a diamond tester, and it’s physically impossible to be allergic to IGT.

More than you think. My daughter is allergic to non-precious metals. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. Sounds like one of those made up female excuses for gold.

She doesn’t swell up like Hitch, but she gets a red rash on her ears if she wears sterling silver or anything else but gold.

Even sterling silver is not pure and has some nickel alloy in it.
Sterling silver (0.925% silver) is usually blended with copper, not nickel.

This is not uncommon but she’s probably fine with sterling silver as well

Very common, but not sure if I should congratulate you for getting as far as marriage before learning such a thing about her. Earrings seem to be an easy simple cheaper gift for an reason.

It's super common. I can only wear gold or sterling silver, anything else turns my ears red and swollen.
