My first semester at LSU in 1981 I wrote a check for tuition (12 hours) for $325. In today's dollars that is about $850-900.

See kids today don't even know what a check is and they always pay more than that for college because they just lack the individualism that we had at that age. They're so soft and cowardly that they're ruining this country.

I actually never hear anybody talk about this in real life and all the kids I know are sharp and progressing through life well.

Every generation had to deal with new problems. But to be honest, the world today is harder on the younger generation. We didn't make as much money but things were less expensive. Our generation and yours has been handicapped by the government trying to balance job equity for minorities and women. This is the first generation that white males are the most hated species on earth. Sorry for the mess we left you with. We inherited one ourselves. Good luck and God bless.

I bought a home in my 20s around 2004-2005 on one income.

ETA - you can thank the women's lib movement and feminism for a lot of the inflation that was caused by two income families

Blue collar skilled trade jobs, yes. Mentors can't find young smart people to mentor.

If so, it's because their boomer parents told them they had to get a college degree at all costs.

I was a tradesman. If I had stuck in it I would own my own business now. I have plenty of friends that practice trades. They're all reasonably intelligent, and most of them are better off financially than I am.

The trades are a fantastic way to earn a living. I have a friend that owns a plumbing company and he says it's hard to find good apprentice plumbers. You have kids spending 50k to get degrees, many of which are worthless in today's job market. They'd be better off going to a vocational school.

We still run this shitbox, and it will all go up in flames without our hand on it.

100% agree.

Problem being, my parents, like many others, told me I needed to go to college immediately, and they wouldn't accept me holding off for a year or more to do anything besides religious-based retreats.

So, I went to school and dropped out after 3 years anyway. I did finish my degree later on, but by that time I had sunk too much money into my degree to go back and accept another job paying 10-12 dollars an hour until I knew the trade any better. Yeah, sure, I'd be well along now, but try telling any 25 year old with $300/month student loan debt that he needs to take a job paying $10/hour because it will afford him a decent living in a few years.

There's just not much of an awareness for what trade schools offer, and the ones that do advertise end up being money pits like Wyotech.

Mine did the same. Fortunately it worked out for me. I make more money than I would have probably ever made in a trade but I have several friends that got Journalism, Marketing, History and General Studies degrees that were ultimately worthless to them in their careers. One of my high school friends has a premed Chemistry degree and got married and decided he didn't want to do med school and is in industrial sales. He makes a great living but he could have just saved the money.

Under REPAYE, to have a $300/m loan payment means you have $45k+ income.

This is not congruent with 10-12/hr.

ETA... take the $10/hr starting job and your income is $1600 gross per month, which means your 10% cap on student loan payments (minus poverty line) is probably only $80 or $90 a month.

Catholic university in Houston:

1985: $125 per credit hour
2015: $1000 per credit hour

16 week calculus course in 2015: 4,000 + $100 textbook = $4,100.

If you don't understand why its acceptable for a boat to be financed at 3.9%, but tuition has to be a higher rate, then you are a lost cause.

Your parents were married with children and owned a home before they were 30 on one income.

Yea, that's because the house they owned was a 2BR/1BA 900 sq ft house. You can still buy a house like this on one income today.

However, you want a fricking McMansion as your starter home. If someone bought a 3BR/2BA house in the 60's and 70's they were rich as frick.

Millenials, take your pity party somewhere else.
