I was talking with a good buddy of mine last night and we talked about going out for a drink after work. I asked him when will he be done for work. He says he's usually done by 5pm but doesn't like to be the first one out the door so he stays late. I never understood this concept, I know people do it but whenever I saw it I assumed those individuals were actually working on something or are extremely inefficient. I guess I also realize it makes it looks like you are a hard worker.

At my current job I'm pretty much on my own but when I was responsible for a good amount of individuals I never cared when they left work as long as all the work got done. I think it's pretty stupid to stay late to try and impress and I would think it leads to peer pressure as well. Just a thought.

I'm normally the first person out out the door at 4 pm

But I'm also normally the first person here in the morning.

I much prefer to work earlier than later.

Well then it could work both ways. Being the first to work or the last to leave. Although I think being the first to work is more efficient as you can get a head start on things. I show up about 30 minutes early along with a few others.

I get more done in an hour before work and an hour after than I do in 4-6 hours of official business hours.

Not for appearances, for survival.

At my job it makes you appear as if you have very poor time management skills as a nurse if you are constantly staying after your shift has ended.

I like to make impressions by showing up later than everyone else and leaving before everyone.

It makes them think, "wow, what an efficient worker"

In an office environment, 90% of your efforts are wasted on impractical bullshite for strictly appearance's sake.

At my last job I got a talking to from one of the owners for always leaving at five. No actual complaints about quality of work or effort, just that it doesn't look like you want to be there if you are out the door right at five.

I get to work early to miss some of the traffic. Traffic at night blows all the time, so I leave right on time.

I see this happen more with folks who don't have a lot of experience and are trying to make a good impression on their boss.

I've been in my field 15 years and have already proven my worth to the company where I work. I actually put in my professional development plan last year that one of my goals was to maintain a healthy work/life balance, the owner laughed and asked what that crap was, but it's a goal I'm serious about.

It's a boomer carryover concept that's terrible. Too many people equate productivity with the number of hours spent butt in seat. With modern mobile office, it makes it even more difficult to get people to understand. What pisses me off is when these people text/call/email after hours and still bitch because you aren't at the office 12 hrs a day.

I once was told by a previous employer that I wasn't putting in enough hours. Now I was averaging 50 hours/week, but I wasn't working weekends. I'm not going to the office on a Saturday just to make appearances. I value my time with my family far more. Not to mention, every time I showed up on a weekend to do work, I'd catch people bullshitting or playing on the Internet. Very rarely do you find people doing actual work.

This is also a valid reason to come in early.
