Curse words are important to a society and language. If "shite" and other curse words suddenly became acceptable, we'd have to come up with new words to use as epithets.
This is the answer. The forbidden nature of the word gives it power.

It is old english. My college english professor claimed that when the normans conquered england they changed the language at court to french. Thus many old english words became improper to use and if you used them you would have to say excuse my french. Then again he might have been full of shite

I was always told it was "soiled hay in transit" from out houses. And "for unlawful carnal knowledge".
I'm sure both are bs.

Shifting social mores dictated by the dominant social paradigm.
Pants used to be a vulgar term.

Pretty much all reverse engineered etymologies are false.
Most words come from some other lingual precursor.

example crap comes from thomas crapper, who was a plumber that improved the flushing toilet

No. That's false too, as the word was used before crapper, who didn't invent the valve mechanism for toilets anyway.
quote:
A related legend has it that U.S. soldiers stationed in England during World War I (some of whom had little or no experience with indoor plumbing) saw toilets marked with the name 'CRAPPER' and brought the word home as a synonym for 'toilet' or 'bathroom.' Although the word 'crap' (used in a scatological sense) antedates Thomas Crapper and is therefore not derived from his name, the origins of 'crapper' as a synonym for 'toilet' are unknown, other than that it is a particularly American term whose earliest print citings come from the 1930s.

I heard since I was a kid that Crapper was where "crap" came from but didn't find out it was false until I just looked it up.

I didnt say he invented it.
but here:
but here:
quote:
Crapper did not invent the flush toilet. He did, however, do much to increase the popularity of the toilet, and developed some important related inventions, such as the ballcock. He was noted for the quality of his products and received several royal warrants.

Sorry. I wasn't calling you out or anything. Like you, I was under the impression that's where the word came from as well.
