Exactly how cheap do you think a maid service should be? $100 for a cleaning is pretty common.

They all double the fee. Insane. Service fee, booking fee, cleaning fee and taxes. 7 days in Austin at $132 a night comes out to $1780. I just ran it in VRBO.

I wouldn’t have a problem with the fees and all that if they were more upfront about it

They finally started putting the actual CAD in the searches (although they put it in small print)

It’s absolutely mind numbingly stupid that you cannot sort by the total CAD instead of the nightly rate.

More and more common to see places post the apartment for way less than the value in order to get attention, but then build in so many fees that by the end of it you’re paying twice as much as the market rate in that area. This could be resolved if I could search by total price like literally every other STR service on earth

I’m fine with the fee, but don’t charge me 100-200 bucks as a cleaning fee and then also leave me a book of rules and expectations that the place will be pristine when I leave. If I’m paying for a cleaning fee then it needs to operate like a hotel and when I’m ready to go, I can just drop it and roll (to an extent obviously)

I can’t speak for all STR owners but I charge 120 cleaning fee for every stay at the ones I have. I’m in a remote location and it’s not easy to find any cleaning service to come out as the big boys don’t like an inconsistent schedule and won’t guarantee your cleaning. Also it’s the same for 1 night or 1 week however I do not accept less than two days. I don’t expect it to be “prestine” as some said however the Marriott does not have dishes to wash it a house full of furniture. We just ask that there is no mess left, sheets pulled and put I. Laundry hampers down stairs and to clean up any excessive mess. Cleaning crew should t have to clean shite off the walls or mounded up dried food on counter tops/ oven.

The worst part is the $100 cleaning fee and you’re still expected to strip the beds, start laundry, take out trash, do dishes, etc.

So you’re charging people $120 to clean and still expect them to do basic tasks like strip beds and bring laundry down? What exactly does the $120 cover? Making beds, brushing toilet, and vacuuming?

I think it’s renter gets a higher percentage of the non-stay fees. Also, when you do a search for places less a certain amount… it gives them a higher chance of being rented for those not looking at the rest of the fees included.

It should include a good disinfecting cleaning of the high touch surfaces (remotes, light switches, etc) entire bathroom and kitchen, restocking supplies (k-cups, toilet paper, paper towels), washing all linens, all floors cleaned but cleaning services aren't doing it with enough consistency and regularity.

We just ask you to clean the place. Then we’ll charge you $120.

AirBnB allowed the golden goose to be killed with all the “professional” hosts and full house rentals. The concept was initially great - rent out an unused extra room for extra income and the traveler saves money vs a hotel.

Then they went to mostly whole house rentals with professional landlords buying up housing stock to rent out as makeshift hotels. Screws people who need a permanent place to live and screws the neighbors having to deal with noise and traffic.

AirBnB is now a cancer. I hope it dies quickly or at least changes back to the original concept.

I would much rather the convenience of a hotel with staff on site 24/7 and not some freak’s rental property decked out with hidden cameras uploading to xvideos.

Only in very specific and limited circumstances - long stays and in situations where you would need multiple hotel rooms. Maybe also when traveling with pets.

Less than 3 night stays with a single person? No way it is cheaper.

I've booked through Airbnb a handful of times and have never had any issues. Curious what issues others who hate it actually have, and are these issues predictable and/or obvious?

I guess you're right and I've just been lucky to find them in just about every one of my trips for more than 4 days for almost a decade. Guess I'm just fortunate.

We just stayed in an Airbnb for 10 nights in late June / early July. It was a nice place, four bedrooms, lots of living space. The cleaning fee was $240...but we hardly had to do anything before we left. We left the beds made, left the towels in the bathrooms, and put dishes in the sink. The only thing we really had to do was take the trash from inside...to the cans outside.

I’ve never had any issues either. There is nothing wrong with the service in and of itself especially for the people staying there. It’s a premium “option” that’s different than a hotel experience. My issue is mainly with how it effects people who aren’t involved in the transaction itself - The neighbors who now have to live next to a hotel and how the demand for these things has driven up housing cost for normal people.
