When i was in the northeast i remember seeing tons of bookstores everywhere some open 24/7. In some southern towns you will be lucky to even find one.

Well overall we are more rural. You see bookstores in the bigger cities in the south.

Uhhh, what's the difference in demographics from Vermont to Mississippi?

It's like asking why are there so many murders and car jackings in NOLA?

Public education as it exists today in the US largely started during reconstruction. Like many things, the south was largely destroyed by the war and wasn’t on an even footing in terms of funding from the very start.

Well, northeast is mostly white, college educated people. The southern big cities are basically ghetto, but there is bookstores. Outside of ghettos it's rural white folks. You have a few suburban areas outside of big cities and small cities, they usually have some bookstores also. Your college towns in the south usually have more independent books stores also.

Education isn’t a priority.

For instance, my kids school is dismissing early tomorrow because the HS basketball team is playing in the state championship.

You also have elected officials like Dodie Horton who waste time every legislative session pushing thru retarded bills. Last year her bill to require “In God We Trust” to be placed in every public school classroom was passed. This year her bill proposes that every public school classroom be required to display the 10 Commandments.

There’s a particular metric that you can adjust for that offsets much of the differential

What?

There are several bookstores where i live and several libraries.

If you are talking about caring about education, black people.

They dont care about their education and see it as being white.

Look at the demographic difference between Louisiana and MS vs Connecticut and Massachusetts

Both those states hover around 80% white, if you include hispanics as white they are both closer to 90% white. The % of the population that is black is less than the nation.

I don’t see this correlating to lack of emphasis. School pride and excitement in extracurricular activities is a sign of a healthy school in my opinion

Don't equate bookstores with education. Try to live up north for 12 months of the year and try not to go stir crazy in six months of winter, in doors, dark and boring.

Redefine education as a class thing. To that add the density of housing and population up north. Lots more people to buy books in lots of small towns.
