Driving drunk and a BAC of.08 aren't the same thing, that's why.

I am generally a small government conservative. Drinking and driving is a public safety issue to me, and public safety is one thing the government should involve itself in

I'm not trying to get in on the driving drunk aspect. I do know when I hear someone say " I'm a conservative and for small government but...." Its usually followed by something the exact opposite of small government.

Most people don't want small government, they just want government enforcimg their special interests and not others.

What, small government is still government. Even a very limited government will have some functions. Protecting public safety is probably the core function of government.

I'm against drunk driving, but .08 is nothing but a money maker and that's not drunk at all for most men.

My soapbox as usual. Wanna fix drunk driving?
Bump BAC back up to .1 and first offense is slap on the wrist. 2nd and so on is a felony with mandatory 90 days work release and rehab at halfway house paid for by the offender or take 6 months in prison.
A first dwi over .16 is treated as 2nd offense.

Bottom line is: Address the legal loopholes lawyers use to get most of the first offenses removed from record and apply stiffer sentences for subsequent DWI.

Maybe if you lost a family member to a drunk driver you guys wouldn't glorify it as much.

Try watching your father live brain damaged for 10 years thanks to a drunk driver. My father was a cop, run over while on duty.

I don't think this board really trivializes drunk driving so much as most of us have driven drunk at one time or another and we catch an odd mix of relief, shame, and nostalgia. We all know its serious shite and it was serious shite when we were young men and running hard but its the rare issue where this board is able to empathize with lawbreakers.

Well the statistics show an increase in causing a wreck at .08. That is a scientifically supported fact.

Statistics show that male drivers under the age of 25 have much higher accident rates which is reflected in their insurance premiums, that is also a scientifically supported fact. If we are going to use increased risk as an argument they should be banned from the road as well, also probably anyone over 65.

Please link those statistics.

If the police were really worried about impaired drivers, I holding cells would be full of texters, make up appliers, and people reading the newspaper while driving.
