re: Why does the OT think driving drunk is no big deal?

My biggest problem is if you kill another driver then that should result in prison. But, if you kill a passenger then you shouldn't be punished. These people made the same decision you made. If people decide to ride with a drunk, many times encouraging them to drive then Indont think a driver should go to prison for that.

"Reduction in reaction time"
I know plenty of people that have far slower reaction time than me. Many women and older people. And this has nothing to do with drinking.
Why is there no reaction time test in general if this is a big problem?

It's Louisiana...those of us over 30 grew up with it. This was before the check points and MADD made it hard to get out of DUI. It was just something a whole lot of folks did. The younger generation, from what I've seen, does not have the same perspective.

Because it's really not. It gets blown out of proportion by the liberal media but I've driven home while black out drunk probably 50 times and I've never killed anyone. I have also driven with my 2 year old daughter in the car after 10-20 beers. She sleeps like a baby in the passenger seat so my driving must not be too bad

I've though about it and would love more stringent requirements to get a driver's license. I've already said that in this thread. Unfortunately that is something that won't happen.
Taking the time to try to get people to avoid driving is absolutely worth it to me.
Also no, I don't smoke.

You do realize all of the 3% is just a specific case about the minimum "legal limit."
People are really really bad at gauging their own level drunkenness (and at gauging their ability to drive drunk).
Most people who actually get charged with DUI are not .08. That is because a lot of people drive at .08 and never raise any suspicion.
The actual overall danger posed by drunk drivers is significantly higher than 3%

I don't wan to come off as some patriotic redneck right here, but you don't sound very American. Let's just make laws to save everyone in the whole country :eyeroll:
And dammit, I was wishing you smoked so I could yell at you about second hand smoke

I am generally a small government conservative. Drinking and driving is a public safety issue to me, and public safety is one thing the government should involve itself in. If someone wants to do something stupid and dangerous for themselves (motorcycle without a helmet) go ahead, but my issue is with people putting innocents in danger for no real reason.
Again, it is just 3%. The actual risk is higher because of significantly drunker drivers. It is also something that is easy for essentially everyone to avoid. Yes, I do also have some personal bias on this issue from a number of sources.
Smoking is trashy af, I don't roll like that.

quote:I'm fairly certain this is the EXACT opposite. The % of people who get DUIs at or around .08 and are driving safely absolutely SHITS on the % that are hammered arse drunk and being dangerous/hurting/killing people.

I'm on my phone so I can't link anything, but IMO, the stats overwhelmingly show that our DUI laws are purely a money grab that don't help make anything better.

I think the states should not be allowed to sell alcohol...and then arrest people for consuming it.

Lol you think people still wouldn't drive? I laugh when people say this shite. You think suspending someone's license is going to keep these people from driving. They don't give a shite. What's really scary is drunk driving while texting. Happens all the time I'm sure now with all the tech shite out now.

I have a few thousand acres I trail ride on.
I can guarantee that me driving after drinking a bottle of bourbon is safer than 99.9% of Baton Rouge drivers.
I will not drive on the road if I'm buzzed at all. Not for the safety of others, but because I don't want the judicial system to rape my bank account.
