Why does the moon rotate like a clock-face above the earth?

Apparently you can track the rotation by taking photos every cycle and the moon can also be used as a compass for true north.

Also, if it's on a spinning axis like the earth, why don't we ever see the back/dark side of moon??

I'm no expert, but I would imagine the axis is perpendicular to the Earth

It rotates at the same rate as its orbital motion.

Why does the earth rotate one way and the moon rotate perpendicular? Wouldn't that, by physics, be impossible since orbital force would force both objects to rotate in the same motion?

easy one first - it is tidally locked with the earth. meaning it rotates one time for every rotation it makes about the earth (- in inertial system, not earth bases system.)

Which means that it is slightly out of balance wrt its center of gravity - there is a 'high' side and a 'low' side to the moon - the high side always points toward the center of the earth.

not sure what you mean by

orbital mechanics are complex.

the moon is tidally locked (because physics), so the same side always faces us. same story with mercury and the sun or other bodies in similar orbital arrangements.

i think our axial tilt causes the craters appear to rotate, but i'm not sure about that.

Google "tidal locking"

ETA too late

If the moon was made of barbecue spare ribs, would you eat it?

Those different pictures are glitches in the matrix.

We can actually see about 59% of the moon’s surface due to a phenomena called “libration” which is caused by various orbital and tidal mechanics.

Because the moon orbits the Earth on a parabolic circumference as first described by Nicolaus Copernicus in 1500 in his Tabulae directionum after he observed a lunar eclipse while studying in Rome on November 6, 1500.

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.
