Why do we as a society avoid talking about death?

It's just a part of life. But whenever the subject comes up, we tend to lie to ourselves and each other about it. We say uncle Gary is on his way to heaven or he's in a better place right now. I think that people have a hard time accept that there's an end to their life.

Unless Gary is black, his life doesn't matter anyway.

Religious people do believe that you go to a better place when you die and religious people talk about death all of the time. Considering most of our society is religious I would have to say you are wrong and we do talk about it.

Adults dont' tell other adults shite like that. You tell small children that, who may not understand the concept of death yet. I don't see why explaining to small children that someone is "in a better place" is a bad thing. Would you rather tell some 4 year old "well, uncle gary drank a lot of adult beverages and swallowed a bunch of sleeping pills and then blew his head off after his wife slept with another man"? Would that be better?

How do we lie to ourselves?

What if that is what that person genuinely believes?

You mean people have a hard time accepting their own non existence? Goddamn, how enlightening of you.

Worked fine for my children. Here's little Timmy and his girlfriend living the dream:

Instead of focusing on death, smart people focus on living. It's limited, so do it good.

It's depressing and to spend the very limited time that we do have talking about it is a waste of time.

Because we as a society are pussies.

No shite, but what the f**k good is talking about going to do?

Buy life insurance, make a will and living will, and then get on with your life. Every minute you spend talking about death is a minute you could be doing cocaine with Ukrainian hookers or smoking weed in Andes or a billion other things are a better use of time than thinking about death.

Speak for yourself brochacho. In the P household we bring it up as much as possible. Dinner, birthdays, Christmas all great opportunities to remind ourselves how short and meaningless life is. You're gonna die like you were born, alone and no one will remember you.

Well, we are an extraordinarily youth-obsessed culture. Still, as one ages one begins to contemplate death from (hopefully) a more mature and accepting perspective. Demise and death are subjects of conversation among me and my friends, all of us being in our 60s.

Along with death, another and perhaps bigger conversation should be had about not dying--that is, spending the last years of one's life in a diminished capacity due to stroke, dementia or some other condition. That is something I and my friends fear more than death, and in today's world, the possibility exists that some of us will indeed have to endure years of useless existence and suffering before we pass away.

Yep and to be a childless couple or individual just adds to the conversation.
