I don't think anyone is buying this. hell there are rich people that think "the rich" are bad.

bitching about someone else doing something has never stopped anyone from doing something they wanted to do.

It's pure envy and/or idiocy.

Many think wealth is a zero sum game. They think because Musk or Bezos has billions somehow that keeps them from being successful.

Also, politicians have done a great job creating the rich boogeyman. It's easier for them to deflect blame from themselves when in reality politicians do more to hold people back from wealth than any other entity.

This is all true, yet we apparently have at least two "eat the rich" Ocasio-Cortez fans in here.

You don't think there is a large segment of society that believe the deck is stacked against them, and therefore there is no reason for them to try to be better?

I think it is pretty hard to ethically build a billion dollars.

Come up with a new product or service that fundamentally changes our society forever and you'll get that billion dollars pretty quickly. Capitalism and allowing great reward for great risk and innovation is what has made the US the greatest most powerful country to ever exist. But the mindset brought up in the OP is what will destroy it. It's already happening.

now the wealthy class is the nobility and uses their money to pass laws to game the system in their favor.

I've never met anyone that avoided becoming rich because they thought rich people were bad, as you suggested.

Have you met someone who would otherwise strive to be “rich” if they didn’t have a negative view of rich people?

I have not.

this was your premise, not mine

we all know people are wired differently. Of the people that i've met that were wired to pursue money above other things in life, someone trying to convince them that rich people were "bad" would not have dissuaded them at all. It was always who they were gonna be.

A combination of envy and rationalization. Most people lack the work ethic, drive, native talent, and intelligence to capitalize on the plethora of opportunities in a free market. But they aren't self-aware enough to recognize their limitations, honest enough to acknowledge them, or diligent enough to overcome them. So rather than blaming their station on their own shortcomings and trying to improve themselves, they develop an elaborate mythology - aided by the press and politicians who want to manipulate them - that they have been thwarted by an inequitable and corrupt system that refuses to recognize their worth. In this mythology, the wealthy, rather than being lauded as individual achievers, are condemned as the benefactors and architects of the dastardly system. The masses - again, driven by the jealous press and the ambitious political class - band together to use the levers of government (e.g. taxes and regulation) to seize the wealth they could not earn based on merit. In return for this service, politicians accumulate ever greater power. The mythology is quite tidy from a psychological perspective, because it insulates individuals from their own faults while simultaneously providing them with a flimsy moral justification for confiscating the things other people earned with hard work. The battle in this country is between wealth distribution based on individual merit and wealth redistribution based on claims of mass grievance and identity politics (which is just a proxy for grievance). If the latter wins, and it may have already, we're done.

Do you know anything about history? This sentiment isn't new, people have hated the bourgeois since the beginning of capitalism.

In America, probably 2% of the population drags the rest of us along.

Its an economy built for speed. It presents amazing opportunity for the rest of us.

I don’t disagree on “haven’t worked for their wealth” but if are we saying building wealth to hand something to children is bad, then I don’t want to be good.

Im not saying be a stingy a-hole but very few people have the attitude of “I don’t want to leave my kids anything or make life harder for them.”

In small town/rural areas "hating the rich" comes in the form of "Oh theres Daddy's Money", "silver spoon" etc etc. Pretty harmless. Now it the "hate" coming out of cities and colleges is much more militant.

You dont help them leaving them stuff if it keeps them from being productive and finding meaning.
