Why do my clothes get discolored/stained in the washing machine?

For probably the last 5 years, once every 5 or 6 months or so I'll pull out a shirt and it will be stained. Sometimes it looks like a bleach stain where it's just a little patch that has turned white, but I don't nor have I ever used any bleach in the wash. Other times it will just be discoloration, not on the whole garment, just a little patch. It is unbelievably frustrating how many shirts I love to wear that have been ruined. I typically use cold water, and I have switched detergents over time. I can't for the life of me figure out where this is coming from.

Are there any suggestions for what could be happening? It only happens to T-shirts, and they are usually lighter/brighter type colors. It's never happened to pants or a dark shirt.

What religion are you? If you picked the wrong one then some times God will use things like this to get you back on track.

Are you making sure you don't wash chapstick in your pockets or anything? Those create grease stains (that get on everything in the wash) and they will not come out once you dry the clothes.

Some kind of skin products you're using? Do you use fabric softener?

Do you let the washer fill with water completely before putting detergent in? Pouring detergent directly onto clothes can cause some stains.

Must be the damned Georgia water....

I have dark tees (all cotton, so there´s one underlying theme) which have suffered the same fate (looks like bleach, but it´s not).

These stains/discolorations seem to multiply or grow in subsequent washings, as well.

The damnedest thing.

yeah I used to throw the clothes in, start the water, then pour directly on top. After I then began to pour detergent, start the water, then add clothes and it seemed to work.

A stain on all those UGA shirts is probably an improvement.

I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself. :l

Have you put new and brightly colored garments in with the rest of your wash? Sometimes the colors will bleed in the first wash.

No, I just put my clothes in the washer, pour some detergent on it, set the dials and go.

I guess that could be it, but it seems like if so it'd be happening a lot more frequently, and on a lot more garments.

No, one machine for about the first 4 years and a different one the last year.

I don't wear any UGA t-shirts, I'm not in high school.

No, I'm always careful on a first time wash. All of the clothes that get stained I've had for years.

I don't know how anyone in the Deep South wears anything else to games. Just too damn hot and muggy to have a polo around my neck.
