What would a society look like where parenthood wasn't as valued?

It would look just like every ghetto across America does today

It would be neat if some alien society came here and gave every human whatever he wanted. No more money was needed. You want it? You got it . Would that lead to more males simply free roaming and baring children with what ever lady gave them a green light?

You realize how close your fantasy world is to the welfare state and the culture of the current black male don't you?

Some humans have not adopted this way of living.

Because I only care about your kids to a certain extent. And you only care about mine to a certain extent.

To truly see this in action, reference putting your kids in daycare during the day while you work.

Obviously this method has proven to be wildly successful, but why exactly? What would a society look like where parenthood wasn't as valued?

Generally speaking, parents will have an innate desire to love, protect and nurture their children that a commune won't match.

Humans didn't intentionally choose that social structure. Societies are subject to the same natural selection as organisms. Societies based on the family-centered structure have always been more successful than communitarian societies. As a result, the family-centered society is predominant today, especially in the developed world.

Wouldn't be an evolutionary driver, because the old and unable to take care of themselves do not procreate.

They still provide value. As other posters have mentioned, humans are the species most reliable on intelligence, and the elderly can provide experience and wisdom even when they no longer contribute physically. Societies with more experience and wisdom are better able to adapt to changes or survive a crisis.

Also, once you reach a certain age there is no longer an evolutionary advantage to being a breeder. That would basically be when your sons are fully mature -- there is no advantage to competing with them for mates. They can pass on your genes for you.

Because God designed it.

Rather than a system where children aren't seen as "belonging" to the two people that made them?

It's very simple really. It was a matter of survival. We were first hunters and gatherers, moving when the area we foraged was depleted and moved along. When farming techniques were developed, all anyone had was the land they lived on. Children needed (and still do) their parents for sustenance and protection. The children cared for their parents once the parents aged and eventually inherited the land.
