Doctors hand out pills too often, instead of using more talk therapy. Because it's quick and easy.
It's easier than dealing with the root causes.
There's an ap for that.

They help with reasons other than being depressed.

Some people have legitimate chemical imbalances in their brains that require medication to act as a balancing agent. If I was not on a cocktail of pharmaceuticals, I would probably have committed suicide or harmed someone else years ago.
I struggled greatly ever since my early 20s going on and off different forms of medication, sometimes being off of anything for years at a time, telling myself not to be "weak" that I didn't need a pill.
But alas, I realized one day that I do indeed need the help of modern medicine to "normal." I found a new doctor and began taking a new combination of meds. A year later and I am as "normal" as I have been since my teenage years.

I'm 35,so I certainly do understand this. However, I don't feel the need to pop a pill to help me cope with the fact that I'm surrounded by idiots. I just play the hand I'm dealt and do what I can to keep myself happy. I don't sit around sulking thinking the only way out is through medication.

you should ask
seriously, at this rate, houses will just become giant pill boxes. The door will have that safety snap that takes you an hour to open ...

If you were to blame the widespread use of pharmaceutical contraceptives, you wouldn't be far off.

See, I understand these scenarios. Some people legitimately need it. What I'm referring to is the mentality that people think they need it because their friends are on it. I can't tell you how many conversations I've heard between women discussing what they take and how it has helped them. I can't fathom that that many people are that fricked up. They aren't, they are lazy and just want the easy way out. Rather than addressing the issue, just take a pill.

I love these threads.
They always devolve into the people who have no "issues" bashing those who do and calling them pussies.
Kinda like the older posters bashing the college kids who take aderall. They don't understand, so they bash.

An opinion from a person who admits he hasn't read or researched the subject.

This is a fact, but it's also true that there is a lot of abuse in this system, and a whole lot of people on anti depressants and little to no counseling.
Anti depressants aren't intended to be a fix, but a tool to use to begin learning how to deal with things. I was married to a severely chemically imbalanced person who made no sense when she wasn't on her meds, but also didn't seek counseling either, and so never dealt with her root causes. It doesn't make the problems or causes go away. It just makes it easier to deal.

I blame our culture. It seems like it is so common to diagnose someone as being depressed (same for other medical problems). Yeah people get depressed and shite, but that doesn't mean they need to be on some pill that just masks the problems. The doctors want to give them out like candy, but how many of those people truely need to be on antidepressants? Also a lot of anti depressant drugs have very very bad side effects, zoloft side effects are some of the worst. I've read where people kill themselves b/c of how bad the sideeffects are.

I don't love them for that reason, but I get your point.
for ex. some of these posters go all in on fat or poor people threads, but when topics like this come up they get defensive and whiny.
It's funny to see some of these clowns expose themselves and not even realize it.

Viagra could help me, and I could get it. However, I don't need it.
That logic is flawed.

reminds me of what a girl from work told me after I said that to her, she said "you don't need to be running around all night and chasing pussy either, but you still do it"

If you can get a hard on, then why would viagra help you?
Transitive property doesn't work
That logic is flawed.
